6mm-222 Powder

So i have picked up my new toy(old Rem 788 with a 6mm 1-8 twist Ted gaillard Barrel) Ive loaded up some 65gr V max over some BL-C 2. When i looked on the hodgdon webpage the only 3 powders listed were BL-C 2, 4895, 4198.. What im curious is i have 7 pounds of RL7 on hand with no use now that my 222 is gonzo... you all think this would be a good powder to try? ive looked on the alliant webpage and there is no reloading data available at all. Ive never been on to really try and experinment away from the books but not affraid to try something new giving im looking for the signs needed.... I was going to maybe try say 18-20grs of powder and see the results.. checking for signs of pressure or soot around the neck.. is this a good place to start?? or is the powder maybe a little on the fast side for that heavy of bullet..

RL-7 is too fast a burning powder for the larger 6mm case and you will never get the loading density you need. When I reload I try to use the slowest burning powder that will give me the lowest pressure with good velocity. This gives you a safety margin when reloading and the ability to stay below the max rated pressure and make your brass last longer.

It looks like he has a new toy that is a Remington 788 in 6mm and wants to use the RL-7 that he used in his .222 that he no longer has.

So Cleftwynd please tell me I'm not getting senile and have attention deficit disorder or need to clean my bifocals. :bangHead:

I misread posts more than you do, and then open my mouth and remove all doubt.... Lol.

I have never used RL7 myself, wouldn't it work in a 222 necked up to .243? Although if it was a 22-6mm rem I would agree that would need a VERY slow powder lol.
 
RE#7 works fine in the triple deuce and in the wildcat .25 Copperhead of John Wooters based on the .222 case necked to .25 Harold
 
H322 might be your friend, at least it is the best powder for the 6mm-223, just how good I don't know yet as I haven't screwed my new barrel on just yet
 
RL7 should work great in the 6mm-222. Quickload ranks it #2 behind H335. With a 65gr Vmax it lists 21.4grs RL7 max for 2990 fps in a 22" brl
 
Hey all!! thanks for the replies!!! Makes me wonder why Hodgdon does not have any of the powders listed that you all mentioned... Next time im home ill try some loads with RL7 and see how it works out.. IT gave me excellent velocity and accuracy in the 222 with 40gr bullets.. (3600fps) so i though it should be a prime canditate for the 6mm-222, but like always.. you dont wanna count your chickens before they hatch.

That sounds a lot like the 6X47 and 6mm TCU that many people shoot.

Edit - brain fart. Hodgdon lists loads!

As mentioned, RL7 is appropriate for a range of bullet weights but would be best for the light to mid-weight bullets.

Thank you all for the replies and info.. i will be mounting a scope this weekend to try it out and see how it shoot.. im hoping well...i will soon start experimenting with powders you all mentioned once i get the free time. thanks once again for all the info and help!!!

I'm shooting 105gr berger after that amax. reading that with 100gr bullets and 8208 guys are getting 2650-2700 with a 22" barrel. Mine is 26" so hoping for at least 2700

It looks like he has a 788 with a 1 in 8" twist barrel that is chambered in 6mm-222.
 
So i made it to the range today with the 6mm-222.. Velocity is alot slower then advertised with the 2 powders i have tried.. With 23.7gr of BL-C2 and a 65gr V max im only getting 2600fps but accuracy is well under 1/4" so im not complaining...
RL7 gave me better velocity and really nice groups as well.. i got 1/4" groups and 2750fps with 19.5gr RL7. I decided to take 6x45 load data and reduce by 10% and start working up looking for signs of pressure. as i got up to 20gr groups opened up to over 1" groups and starting to see signs of pressure @ 21gr.. velocity was 2900fps but groups were no hell..

I will settle on 19.5gr of RL7. Will still be good enough for coyotes and groundhogs.
