I have a remington barrel in 6mm-284 should I put it on a 30-06 length action or would it be better on a short action?
anyone have experience with this wildcat?

I dont see the need for anything based on the 284 case to be chambered in a long action rifle. Might as well use the 30-06 case then

Shorter action will mean shorter COAL, the 284 is quite a long cartridge for a short action magazine. Shorter action means a lighter, stiffer rifle - whether that translates to higher accuracy is debated by some, but one cannot deny the preponderance of short actions on the benchrest circuit.

Regardless of short or standard action, the 6mm-284 still has one key advantage over the similar (nearly identical) 6mm-06 and 6mm wby - longer effective barrel length. Compare a 6mm-284 to a 6mm-06 in a 26" finished barrel - there's about a 1" advantage to the 6mm-284. Again, like a SA, this contributes to a smaller, lighter more compact rifle.

Hi, Matt, and welcome to the board!

Guys, Matt is a good friend of mine. Lived in Whithorse until a few years ago. He and I have burned quite a bit of powder together, traded guns and swapped a lot of stories.

River Rat on the board here (Gary G) has a 6mm-284. His is on a short Rem 700. I think he is pretty pleased with it.

100 gr at 3400 fps. :D

How does it not? The 284 has the same capacity as a 280. Therefore, a 6-284 is basically the same as a 6mm-06. Does it not make sense that a 6mm-06 should outrun a 6mm-08(243) or a 25-06?

case capacity is about 10 grains more. 400 fps? thats quite the increase in performance :D

so if a 6-284 can outrun a larger 25-06, should it be possible using this same logic that a 284 Winchester is faster with equal bullet weights than a 30-06? ;) :D

amazing what high pressures will get ya :dancingbanana:

If a 6mm-284 gives you more than 150 fps over a 243 everything else being equal, it's due to higher pressures. If a 6mm-284 equals or beats a 25/06, same thing.

I get around 3000 fps from my 24" bbl 243, 3100 fps from my 6mm Rem, and just under 3200 fps from my 6-284, all with 100 gr bullets, no pressure signs. My 240 Gibbs gives me closer to 3400-3500 fps with the same bullet weight (depending on who's bullet). You gain a little with the larger cases but not a whole lot. I haven't finished my 6mm Mach IV yet, so I don't know how much gain I will get from that, but I expect around another 100-150 fps fps will be about it. - dan

Kootenay - I've shot a 6/284 for 3 or 4 years built on a short action. It has
been very good. I've used RL-19 and 22, 4831SC, H4831 but I really like
H-1000 and 105 gr bullets. Little to choose between Hornady or Berger.

If you check you will find a 6-284 has more case capacity then a 240 weatherby. You should be able to get 3400 from a 240 if you use the right powder from the Pacific manual norma 205 54.2 grain 3396 fps

With data I have collected from different sources over the years I have safely worked up with absolutely no pressure signs to 3500fps with 90gr Barnes X bullets in my custom Voerre long action 6mm-284 chambered rifle.

I prefer a long action for this cartridge due to it allowing me to seat the bullet to exactly the length I want without worrying about running out of magazine length.

I have down loaded it lately with 100gr Nosler Partitions @ 3250fps for deer hunting.

The 6mm-284 is an awesome, accurate round...
