Hey everyone. I acquired a savage 99 with a ackley barrel chambered in 6mm/30-30AI and I would like some input on the cartridge and possibly a source within Canada to get dies and brass.

Dies are likely custom order, no issues ordering from the US. 30-30 brass should be easy to find, 25-35 might be easier to form.

Neat gun, photos would be nice to see.

Forget a Canadian source C+H dies in the USA ships here and has or will make almost any die you desire.........Harold

I see that your in Edmonton. If your on Facebook, there's a page called Central Alberta reloading room and shooting bench.
A member just posted a set of forming and reloading dies, and he is located close to Edmonton. I hope it helps.

Thank you. I am on that page and just messaged him on there. Crazy story he knows the rifle and knows P.O. Ackley the smith that designed and built it. Small world.

The stamping on the barrel is confusing PO Ackley and the stamp indicating 6mm30-30 caliber plus the Xed out portion. to me it appears to be a barrel of a 6mm bore rechambered. Reloading a few shells to start with can be done with the 243 die plus 30-30 die. The bullet would have to be loaded long to jam into the lands, keeping the brass against the bolt face when firing. At this point you would have fireformed brass. You would have to send a fired shell to whoever ,Lee will make up the correct dies at reasonable prices.
Enjoy

You can buy 6mm neck sizers. Hornady used to sell them. I second the chamber cast idea, unless you're in contact with someone who has fairly intimate knowledge of that rifle. A P.O. Ackley stamp on the barrel does not mean it has the Ackley chamber he was famous for. He also made standard designs, various different shoulder angles, same with neck lengths. Lots to figure out. Pretty cool rifle though, and a fine deer cartridge in that gun, assuming enough twist. - dan
