6MM Ackley Improved VS 6-284

I'm having a 243 AI twisted up right now...chose the 1:9 twist in order to run the mid range 70's on up (main focus being the 85gr TSX).

Case forming for the 6mm-284:

- Lee sells dies for $40;
- brass can be formed in a one-step fashion from 284 or 6.5-284

6mm AI:

- Custom dies
- standard fireforming procedure, then size as per normal

Leeper is pretty close on the 800 rd/bbl. My 6-284 started to lose vel @ under 1000 rd. I liked the setup so got it rebarrelled. My 240 Gibbs has only 500 or so and still looks ok. I like the 6.5/284 better than the 6's. Mark

I have loaded my 6mm-284 too 3500fps with 90gr Barnes X bullets but reduced the velocity to 3250fps with 100gr Nosler Partitions, I didn't feel that I needed to push them any faster.

Great conversation here.

I just built a 6mm AI and went through the whole gammet of what to build; 243 AI, 6mm AI, or the 6mm-284. Keeping in mind I wanted a hot-rod 6mm.

The 243 AI basically gets the same velocoties as the plain 6mm rem. The 6-284 had appeal, but burning more powder for maybe 50fps, and the 6.5-284 is well known as a barrel burner, so the 6mm-284 could only be worse. Also heard it can be a little finicky to find a load for?

This left the 6mm AI, 11% more case capacity than the parent case and supposedly the long neck on the 6mm case will provide some protection and not burn the throat as fast as the 243 AI.

One thing- If you go with the 6mm-284, or the 6mm AI and plan to shoot the VLD bullets go with a long action. My reamer only has .050fb, and I had to go with a wyatts extended mag box to get the 87 grain Vmax to feed out of a Rem short action where the bullet wanted to be.

I'm going for the 1 in 12 twist BECAUSE I want to shoot mostly 60-70 grain bullets. I'd much rather have a tack driving load for coyotes then deer.

Cordur,
I don't know about ALTA but you can't use a 224 calibre for deer in SASK.
And a 22-250AI isn't necessary...I already have a 22-243 Middlestead.

Dawg,

With the velocity of the 6mm AI you could get away with a 14 twist. What twist is your Middlestead? You will be shooting a 75 grain bullet at around 3800 fps with either the 6-284, or the 6mm AI.

I ask because seems to me to be a duplication if you are shooting light bullets out of the 22-243?

I have been shooting the 87 grain Vmax out of my 6mm AI, and plan to shoot the 85 grain TSX for deer. a 10 twist is ideal for these weights.

longdraw,

My Middlestead is a 12 twist...

Yes you're right they'll be very similar to each other.
My thoughts however are 1) I'll have two instead of one which will prolong each barrels life, and 2) the 6MM AI will be legal for deer here.

With your suggestion of the 14 twist...won't that just get me further from accurate 80-90gr bullet weight loads?

I thought the 12 twist should shine on 60-70s but still hold decent groups for a 87 or 90gr pill.

Exactly!! If you could get your hands on some of the old 100 grain Nosler Partition semi-spitzers, you can shoot them in a 12" twist also. Eagleye.

I'd go with the 10 twist. I get great accuracy out of 70 grain SMK's with it as well. As well, it seems real well suited to the 80-90 grain bullet.

Good luck with whatever route you go.

I have had both the 6mm Ackley and the 240 Page Sooper Pooper. The only difference was the Page had a 28 degree shoulder and was far less work to get to feed reliably.

Both were great rifles, and both got well over 3300 fps with 100 gr bullets.

Ted
