I was reading up on the old Remington 6mm and the 6mmAI and thought to myself that the volocity would be very close to the new 243 WSSM. The article was geared toward ground hawg hunting and the 75 grain Vmax. They were hot on the 1 in 12" and 1 in 14" ROT for the greater speeds.

Any thoughts??

I have had two improved 6mm rifles, a 6mm Ackley and a 240 page Sooper Pooper.

Both would give 100 gr bullets well in excess of 3300 fps. Biggest problem was most bullets would not hold together on game. Even Nosler partitions came unglued!

That would not be a problem today with all the premiums, but was back then.

6mm AI is a great cartridge, and a capable 1800 yard round with VLD's. If I was the writers you referred to though, I'd go for the 87gr VMAX, way better BC and still mighty explosive, especially at 6mm AI speeds.

Don't forget to look at .243 AI, it actually catches my eye more, because you can easily fireform Lapua brass.

Case volume for the WSSM is very similar to the 243 AI. If both are loaded to similar pressures, the results would be the same.

I lean towards the 243 because there will never be a shortage of brass. Another 50 to 100fps really doesn't do much for me as long as both are equally accurate.

Actually, I think there is a general prohibition on linking to businesses that don't sponsor here, and I think there was some whining about linking to Gunbastards :)//gunbastards.proboards25.com/); but I don't think anyone would object to other websites like 6mmbr.com or http://www.m-14forum.com/ or http://guns.connect.fi/gow/index.html for instance, because they really don't sell anything, and so can't divert business for our sponsors.

there's some interesting reading at that link....

I've always liked the plain old common, every one has one, good kids gun etc. etc.....243 Winchester. I've owned probably a half dozen of them over the last 16 years.Even had one in a heavy barrel 700 that was my sole gopher/coyote rifle for a couple years. The 65 gr VMax woud vaporize the little pasture poodles like red bombs.
Shot the same rifle in an informal target match once, still have the target...5 rounds into 1-3/16 at 300 meters....105 AMax at 3000....and it shot very flat too...

I may have to get another 243 someday...but I'm sitting on a couple 6mm Remingtons at the moment....
