a better question is ,

how many people actually practce with the rifle they use ?

a couple weeks ago i helped a couple guys track a deer that was hit broad side just between the rear legs and lungs with a 30-06 ....

it was a all day experience trying to find it , and it was still barely alive when found almost 24 hours after it was shot .

a bigger round doesn't make marginal shots any more effective if you miss the vital organs .


i can't speak to the efectiveness of the 243 , but my experience with the 6.5x55 is a consistant " bang " " flop" with deer and moose .

the 243 should be no different assuming a heavy for caliber , quality bullet put directly into the heart lung area ...

with one added thing ,

the person pulling the trigger has recently spent a lot of time practicing with the rifle in question .


something that was stressed to me when i was younger by a old timer that would apply to lower power rounds like the 243 ;

" if you need more than a 4x scope you aren't hunting , you are target shooting " ..... in other words , if the animal is so far away a 4x scope isn't enough , the animal is too far away to make an efective shot .

My father in law used to use the .243 with 105 grain Hornady soft points exclusively for moose. He shot many and never lost one.

Wow i can't believe how this thread got everyone so worked up. I asked the question because i just wondered. I,ve had this thing for a 240whby for a while and i was just day dreaming about it at work. Wondered if anyone has used one or the like for moose. I personally use a 30-06 that I love and have shot a few with. Even when i do finally get my 240 I will only use my 06.

What you should have asked is "Has anyone ever shot a moose with a 6mm lazer beam". And to answer your question. I have never seen it, but a lady at work told me she shot a cow moose, a cow elk and a black bear with her 243 in the last two years. I think she shoots it for recoil reasons and is more than happy to wait for the proper oppertunity. For me it's a 338 win mag for moose.

Now that Gentlemen is indisputable logic, my sentiments exactly!!! Which is exactly why 2 months ago I took only my .375 H&H (the TRUE KING) to africa and shot everthing fom 15 lb blue duiker to 500 lb lion to 3000 lb giraffe with it, that logic is impecable!!!

Your Pa not only had a good logical and practical philosophy, he also had good taste in his choice of firearms. That's also my favorite 30 cal magnum.

And it shoots well.

Oh, in addition, here's a picture of my dear old Dad, from the 30's I believe.

Concerning .22s, my uncle told me at a place west of Edmonton many years ago, Dad twice put down Mule Deer with my old .22 Cooey Senior when he & Dad were doing roof repairs to the old homestead house.

It was a "Ranger 22LR". "Senior" that kept meat on the table in my grandparents house when my father was young, I am old enough to remember that same rifle bringing home deer, grouse and rabbits regularly. I now own that old 22, and some day so will my boy.

i have shot several moose over the years and when i take a shot i want to know its a kill shot or i watch the animal walk away (also fun to do) please make sure your caliber is enough.. i use a 7mm mag 175 grain. 308 back-up riffle and will not shoot more than deer with that. thanks for asking for feedback before possibly wounding an animal... good on ya

Thanks guy. The .22 Cooey Senior I made mention of became my 1st rifle and shortly after I got it was when my Uncle related the tail of Dad and the two Mule Deer. A fitting end, my Son in the B.C. interior now has mine.

You mentioned yours was a Ranger. That's the name on a little single shot .410 that sits on the dash of my truck for 'ditch chickens' going to and from camp on Moose hunts. Over the years it's kept us well supplied with Ruff Grouse for camp meat and Ruff Grouse, 'horse de overs' (Hors D'oeuvres) for the trip back home.

Oh, came back after a morning hunt and there was a 'herd' of Spruce Grouse feeding on the Blueberry bushes in the front yard at the cabin.

You didnt hijack anything. I didn't say I was going to hunt moose with a 6mm. I don't even have one yet. I already have a dedicated moose gun. Its a browning a-bolt medallion in 30/06. That's my moose gun and I wasn't looking to replace it. Also love the pics Johnn Peterson. All I asked in the beginning was if anyone has seen or shot a moose with a 6mm or the like. Thats it. Funny how things get blown out of proportion.
