6mm BR

Gday guys, today i got to play with a 6mm BR an shot the Gong a few times from 250 back to 400meters....
it was using something like a 57? gr Vmax i believe...... ?

quite an interesting little case, very well mannered in a Rem 700 rebarrel job with a 20x nightforce x56mm? on it....

It had me thinking.... an i thought, You canadians would have used them for Critters- an i wondered what sort of critters had been shot with the little round?


my Bro in law had been spotlighting Deer with it of late, but it was purchased as His Kangaroo harvesting rifle, as he shoots for human consumption which can be debated as to weather its actually pet food or not, depending on the quotas and whats being asked etc...... regardless they are head shot only kills....

he did just buy a 22.250 to step out a bit more than the .223 for the buck Roos.....


i noted that it wasnt lightning Fast----- but he seems to think its rather flat shooting...

i dialled to #3 for 300 meters, not sure if that was 3 moa, or if its half setup for 300 m LOL...... but i wasnt too good at 400m an assume i didnt have enough dialled (didnt have camera on to capture where it was landing either)


So whats your take on the 6mm BR for hunting?

Pretty much same as a 243. 243 has a little bit more jam depending on the individual barrel.

I knew of a guy who shot many a Fallow deer on Sydney Island near Victoria BC with the 6mmBR.
Out to 300 M on the island runway....

The 243 Winchester is hard to beat when your target is animals.

I like the 243 but go with a 1:8 twist to allow a bigger bullet and should work well. Have rebarreled all my 243 to the 1:8.

It’s a lovely little round, and one of the more interesting I’ve toyed with but I haven’t revisited it in nearly 20 years. Way better barrel life than .243 for volume shooting like you’re talking.

I have never used one for hunting but have owned five in different configurations of competition rifles over the years.
My current favorite for sling'n'irons steel and any/any matches is a mauser actioned , Benchmark barreled 6mmBR .
It is a very accurate rifle.
I have never fired a hunting bullet out of any of them just match bullets, but have found them super easy to load for, a d brass lasts a very long time.
My latest lot of Lapua brass is on load 19 using either 29.5 grains of 4895 or 30 grains of Varget and 105/108 bullets.
Accurate right out to 1K, so with a hunting bullet I'm sure you will be very happy with it.
It doesn't have the case capacity for velocity of the 243 however , and that may be a consideration to look at .

My current 6 BR is a 1-8 twist. Shoots heavy 6mm bullets very, very well. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on game up to deer. It really is an easy cartridge to load accurately for and to shoot. Little recoil, extreme accuracy. build it in a lighter rifle for field use and go to it, I say. - dan

That would have been the 58 V-Max... not the best accuracy bullet for the 6 BR... I have had several BR's in the .22 cal 6mm and 7mm persuasions. It is a well balanced little cartridge and nets excellent results from that little case... in fact I think one of the top two rifles I ever owned for accuracy was a Ruger M77 Mark II Varmint in 6mm BR.
