Gentlemen I need some advice and info. I am going to build a rifle that will hopefully end up to be a great longrange paper puncher/gong ringer.
I have a Remington BDL 6mm varmint and I want to rebarrel it and am going to have it chambered to a 6mm AI, (a 6mmbr is still lurking in the back of my mind as well:redface:). I want it to be capable of hitting gongs out to 800-1000m.
Would a 1 in 7 twist be what I need for the 115gr bullets? I'm embarassed to ask, but is this particular rifle considered a long action? Any suggestions for stocks that are similar to a macmillan m5 with a smaller price tag would be appreciated.
This rifle in it's current state shoots 5 in 1moa, but looking through the barrel with a borescope shows wear that looks like an alligator hide so it's only a matter of time before it losses what accuracy it does have.
I figure I have a budget of $2000ish to make a fun accurate rifle so any advise or do's or do not's that will save me surprises/money along the way would be helpfull.
 
A 6 BR will do the job, no doubt. Your action is a short action. Butler Creek makes a decent stock for reasonable money, of a similar design to the McMillan. I personally like the 6 AI, but it is overkill for paper punching. A 1-7 twist will work with the 115 gr bullets. Rebarrel with a decent quality bbl, restock with a good bedding job, rework or replace the trigger. A 20 MOA base with good rings and glass, and you should be good to go. - dan
 
I'd go .243AI or smaller, such as the 6XC, 6 Dasher, 6BR, etc. If you're not stuck on 6mm, then the .260 would be another good option.

A 1:7" twist Krieger sounds good.

You might want to look into B&C stocks, Manners stocks, and Butler Creek stocks.
 
A 6BR would do the trick but might not have enough jam for 115's if that's the bullet you are set on using.

105's I have shot out to 1200yds no problem with my BR
 
Contact Sean at North Shore Barrels, he has done two very outstanding builds for me in the recent past, both are excellent shooters. For a McMillan A5 like stock, check out the Choate stocks, you can usually get a fully adjustable version for approx $500 and they work really well. I am not familiar with the 6mm so i can not offer any assistance there, always wanted one though. I have some limited experience with the 260 though, and I am learning that when I do my job, the rifle and the cartridge are more than up to the task.

I have had two 6AIs and think they are a great calibre! With that said one of them has just been rebarreled to a 6BR! The barrel life won't be near as long on the AI, but the extra velocity is appreciated in some conditions! Not sure what kind of barrel life to expect on the 6AIs...haven't shot one out yet, but I am keeping very close count. You hear horror stories from some guys of short barrel life...but most of them are pushing every possible grain of powder they can into them! I just don't see the need...a 6AI is a hot little cartridge to begin with! Just my 2 cents!
 
I'm not set on the 115's, I just want somthing that will carry well. I am really torn now with which caliber to go with. I intitially was going to go 6BR butthen wanted 6mmAI, already I'm starting to change my mind. Please keep feeding me info to help me with my decision. I really appreciate it.

why not stay with 6mm Rem. Brass are cheaper than 6br(I also shoot this cal.) and no hassle of fire forming the IA. superb accuracy out to the distance you've mentioned.
Go with the Choate fully adjustable stock for around $550.
Mine is built off a Rem short action and 1-10" barrel sits on an AICS stock. But if you want to shoot a heavier bullets then do with a 8" twist.

As far as not staying with 6mm...I just want somthing different,and when I say different... I mean different than what my buddies shoot. I have one friend with a 6mmBR and the rest of them don't really know anything other than 3006 or 308:rolleyes:. That's alright because to them I'm a fricken genius when it comes to rifles, and you can see by my questions I most certainly am not.
I am not really interested (right now) at a 243 but now,(and for the 100th time) maybe leaning towards a 6mmBR.
I think a little more research then start ordering pieces.. Thanks for the help
 
If you want to shoot the 115s at the speeds where they really shine then you have a few options.
.243 AI
6CM
6SLR

The new Berger 105 hybrids have a higher BC than the 115 vld anyways so why not go to a smaller case and use the hybrids? They are very good in my 6XC!
 
6mm Crusader is basically 6mmAI with the angles optimized for mag feeding:

The ultimate 6mm bullet is the Matrix Ballistics 117 VLD (new thick jacketed one). From my testing, I estimate the BC to be around 0.630, and the Crusader can launch it at 3200 fps. It's a frikken laser!

A plane Jane .243 or 6mm Rem can also launch the 115/117s at respectable velocities.
