Good day all. I recently got a 6mm Remington in a 788 and I wanted to make a super fast load for it as a varmit rig. I got a bunch of 55gr Nosler BT and the Nosler manual says that Win 760 was the most accurate and shows to be the fastest powder. Wounding what experience people have?

I am also thinking of making a load with the 80gr ttsx. Any suggestions on powder with them?I find the Barns manual lacking for powder options.

My experience is w a 243, which is pretty close to the 6mm. I haven't used the 55gr BT's. I think you will find them to be quite a short bullet, which means they will end up seated way back from the lands. I always used the 70gr BT. At ca. 3600 fps the 70gr bullet is friggen deadly on coyotes. It typically produces an instant kill.

The 243 / 6mm is a bit too big to shoot at gophers, cause the barrel gets too hot within 10 shots. However I did shoot gophers with mine a few times and the terminal effects are .......... staggering. Gophers literally explode. I had one that blew the gopher in two, with the halves ending up something like 20 yards apart. The explosion was so powerful that it left a starburst pattern in the grass.

I would think that the 70gr BTs on something bigger, like marmots would also be spectacular.

The go-to site for load data is: https://www.hodgdonreloading.com/reloading-data-center

I used to shoot that exact combo 55bt and win 760. Great load for 300yrd and in. Not very good in the wind.
Shot that barrel out with that load in an old factory rem 700 varmint. When I get around to it I wanna do a 12 or 10 twist barrel up in 244 ai. Geared to shoot the 70 grain v max.

I load 4895 in my 6mm Rems for the 55grs. Have a load for both IMR and Hodgdon. For the 80gr ttsx I load Superformance. I much prefer to use some old 85gr Nosler Solid Base Boat tail loaded with IMR 4831 for when I take the 6mms out for deer.

OP,
Do NOT push the 788 as hard as a 2 lug 700 receiver.....in any caliber.

5/8-3/4 throttle loads will serve you well in a 788.

You have 3 lugs at 0300 that do all the work in a 788 action...the other 6 lugs are along for the ride.

If you see primer cratering of ejector swipes on the case head, you are pushing the 788 tooooooo hard.

When the bolt handle peels off the bolt body....I told you so!!

I will not mention my 6mmGrendel, 6BR,243 or 6mmRem loads w/ the 55gr BT's @chrono'd 3900+fps.

How much powder were you using and what kind of velocity were you getting?
