Looking for peoples traditions/ believes/ practices, what ever.
Gonna be trying my new baby out any day now.
Got a Remington XR 100 in .204 Ruger rebuilt, Had the local master build a 6mm BR barrell , it's 30" long has a 1-8" twist and looks like it could be used as a spare axle for the trailer i have , it was designed to use 107gr MK's.
XR stock was opened up enough to free float it , we put in an adjustable Kelby trigger with settings of 2, 4, 6 or 8 oz. and set it to 4 oz. (i've shot lighter ones) and tested to make sure we couldn't accidently trip it.
The actions was all blue printed and trued up and a Sako extractor was added. I mounted a shortened Warne rail and placed my (almost) new Bushnell Tactical 4200 6x24x50 scope on top.

What i'm looking for is people's practices with new barrells/guns,, do you just shoot it and clean it when you get home? do you pre clean/lube it before using it ? do you clean after every shot for a certain number?
I've got opinions of my shooter buddies here and I myself cleaned my last new one after every 5 shots for the first 50ish.
What would you do ?:confused:

I would take it to the range and shoot it. Clean it when the groups open up.

Just curious why you went with a .204 to build a 6BR when the boltface for a 6BR uses the .308 boltface? Did your smith have to open it up? The 22-250 would have been the better choice if that was the reason you bought the XR in the first place as it has the .308 boltface already.

But definately make sure you give the barrel a few wet patches and then dry it B4 shooting.

I personally shoot 1 and clean for the first 5 rounds and then move up to a group and see what the fouling looks like.

The important part is to use a good bore guide, good patches, bronze brush, and a good solvent when cleaning. It does not take long.

The final tip is it is not a race when you are pushing the rod down the barrel cleaning. Slow and steady wins the race. To many barrels get ruined by the big race when cleaning them. As soon as the rod exits the barrel stop and pull back so the dirty patch falls off. Same as when using the brushand wipe the cleaning rod every time it exits the bore guide

Get a priest and some holy water or your favorite charm to enchant the barrels accuracy. I usually sprinkle my mana crystal potion from the 8th realm of Zilon, thats what the guy told me to do when I bought it, anyways it seems to work for me. In all seriousness, just start shooting and clean when necessary. Enjoy :)
 
Jam bullets into lands, shoot and clean at the end of the day. If it is an RKS barrel, he does not lap them and it may benefit from a break-in just to avoid excessive copper build-up.

Check out the Krieger barrel site. Go directly to their site or thru 6mmBR site; look under barrels. Some good info on cleaning and break-in.

Krieger (Like all businesses that supply barrels) has a vested interest in having you follow their break-in. Since no two barrels are the same and since there are no objective published studies or comparisons on break-in versus not, the value is largely anecdotal. Being in the barrel business, I love people that break-in!

My personal opinion (which is as (in)credible as anyone else's on the subject...) is that you are wasting some of the most accurate shots your barrel will ever make on a practice of unproven and controversial benefit.

The barrell is made by a guy just north of me. Everything he touches wins matches. It started out life as a 10-12' piece of barrell stock on the floor.
Its 30 " long (wanted a few more f.p.s.) and has a 1-8 twist, gotta talk to him about specific chamber dimensions still but i'm gonna try some of the pre loaded diamond line ammo i have here to see how it goes.
We used the the XR because of the stock basically I find them really comfortable for me and extremely easy to hold steady and shoot.
Another rifle he built for my buddy is based on the XR and its in .223 rem and its an unbelieveably accurate shooter. Maybe one day soon i'll post pics of the targets it shoots.

Gonna be a good summer !!

Got out today and sited in the new one. After my buddies got finished I set up and fired 15 rds. . I snaked the barrell after every shot for the first 10 then just shot the last five.
We were set up at 200 yds. . I had bore sited the scope this morning and my first shot was High and right, second shot I had over corrected (listening to someones advice) and shot Low and left. Backed up half of my corrections and put the next two touching just right of center, 1,2 clicks left put me dead on center inside of 5 shots.
Second target all five around the center and can be covered by a canadian penny.
Third target unknown result as I had a buddy that was too anxious to shoot and used my third after I did.
Rifle shoots fantastic, little to no recoil the only prob. I had today was I found that the scope I'm using on this has too thick a reticle to see the bullseye to my liking. I've found you can't make the holes touch if you can't see the holes.
I'm eyeballing my buddies unused Nightforce at 42X right now,,,,,, smirk.
I've got pics of targets and rifle but don't know how to post em on here.

Re comments on Krieger break-in and cleaning procedure:
Take the time to read their article first and then you will see it is not biased towards any barrels, including their own. You may be surprised to see what they have to say. And I do not own a Krieger barrel either; wish I did. :D

CyaN1de, like your project too! Great pic.s too. I've been thinking of taking a XR in /250 and converting to a 22BR, or going the 6BR route. Was thinking of using a Win Coyote as a platform to do this too or a Sako. Can't decide which to go with...decisions, decisions. I think they would all work with a good aftermarket bbl in 6BR.

As far as I know the bolt face is the same, he's never said anything about changing it or ordering one different.

If someone here can PM me with basic instructions for uploading pics to the thread i'll try it, I have a couple of pics of the rifle and the first targets.
