Hi,
my friend wants to buy a 6mmbr. He is not sure what twist to go with 1:8, 1:10, 1:12 or 1:14. The guns he is looking at is a Savage LRPV 1:12 or
a Cooper model 21 varminter 1:10 or 1:14. most of the time he will be shooting from 100 to 300yard and sometimes 1000.

Thanks

For 100 to 300yds I recommend a 1:12 for 65 to 80gr pills. For 1000 yds you need a 1:8 tw barrel to stabilize the 105 or 107 gr pills.
With my 1:12 6br and 75gr v-max bullets, ground hogs are toast out to 400 to 500yds.
I will be installing a new 1:10 tw barrel as I want to shoot the 87gr v-max and 90gr. VLD bullets out to 600 yds.
Decisions... Decisions

He will not be able to shoot 1000 with a slow twist light bullet combo.

8" twist and the high BC 105 bullets are the ultimate for 6BR accuracy. This combination absolutely dominates 300M ISSF competition. There is no real down side to using the heavier bullets.

Just to set you straight.... Canada's source for the worlds most accurate rifle barrels is "MacLennan Rifle Barrels" right here in Midland Ontario. Rob sells Barrels all over the world, both button and cut rifled, and doesn't even have a Web Site. Yes, I have his Phone number.

"...heavier bullet cost more..." Nope. If he's not reloading, he's limited to Norma and Lapua factory ammo. Neither are cheap, if he can find any. Brass isn't cheap either.
Tell him to go with a fast twist.
The Norma ammo has shot .42 MOA(1.38") at 300 meters. Pretty amazing.

What is your friend going to use the rifle for? Competition, Varmints, casual targets and varmint hunting? He must decide. There is no one gun that will be best for all....unless you have more then one barrel like I do.

Competition to 1000 yds: 1:8 tw for 95 to 108gr VLDs
Competition to 300 yds: 1:14 tw for 60 to 70gr Flat base
Casual target and Varmint hunting to 400 yds: 1:12 tw for 65 to 80gr
Casual target and Varmint hunting to 600 yds: 1:10 tw or 75 to 95gr

We're gettin closer...

There is no reason why your buddy cannot shoot the lighter bullets at the shorter distances from a 1:8 twist barrel to avoid paying for the heavy bullets if that is his desire, but still be able to shoot the 105/107's out to the 1000yd mark.

I have shot 75gr V-Max out of my 1:8 with no issues.

Go with a 1-8" barrell and be done with it.

2-3 weekends ago mine shot a .160 5 shot group at 100 yards with 105's.

4 of my Barrells have been MacLennans. He does make fantastic stuff but that's not to say others don't too. He just happens to be local to me and is a great guy to deal with.

Mike.
