I'm pleased to report that with Covid receding in the rear view mirror, the 6th Annual Double Gun Classic has been scheduled for Saturday, June 4th at our usual location, the Oshawa Gun and Target Club (I think it's been renamed since last time). The scheduled time is from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm although I think being there a bit early or later makes no difference.

As in past years, we will have a skeet field reserved for our use while the event is on. And also as in past years we will be using the picnic table area under the roof as our main gathering area and display area for the guns.

Anyone with an interest in vintage and modern SxS (and cool O/U but there are hardly any of those ;)) should consider attending. There is typically quite a stunning array of guns on display and being used. While it's not possible with all of the guns, for anyone interested in seeing what it is like to shoot with a high end vintage SxS, I know a few will be available to be tried out on the skeet field. Additionally, as in past years, attendees will get to vote on Gun of the Year. And I'm pretty sure there will be some spectacular guns to choose from. That said, ALL are welcome, both the people and the guns. So if you want to bring your working SxS that has earned it's stripes in the field, we'd love to see them as well.

The skeet aspect of the day is a fun and casual ad hoc shoot, not a serious competition. The point is to get those SxS on the range. But that doesn't mean there isn't some fine shooting going on. Just not by me! ;)

One development that had been naturally occurring over the years was a bit of a buy/sell table for guns and accessories. I think we will see a bit of that again this year so if you have a hankering to dip your toe into the vintage SxS world, there will probably be a few to consider that you can shoulder and likely shoot.

Anyone who is interested in joining us, besides posting in the thread, please PM me with your name and email so I can contact you quickly with updates. And please let potentially interested parties who aren't from CGN know about the shoot. We are non exclusive.....you don't have to be a Gunnutz....it just helps.

Here's a link to the last thread on this subject from two years ago. The OP has listed the winners of the Gun of the Year.

More information will be posted as we get things figured out with the club but at this point there is one noticeable difference from past years.

As a result of the Covid lockdowns and related issues, the Oshawa Club has made some fundamental changes to their business model. Like many clubs, they no longer allow the general public to just walk in and shoot after paying a fee. Very similar to my little club near me. So we have been sponsored by an existing Oshawa member, ParksPipes. So a big shout out to Michael for that. Additionally, they now charge a $25 fee to all guests on the grounds. The $25 is largely related (so they say) to covering liability issues, which we all know are getting more and more expensive. On the plus side, the fee for a round has dropped to the "member" price. Not a huge difference but nice anyway. Lastly they have moved away from using tokens and now use a card system. So we will be working out how we will be working that. The cards have to be prepaid and then are used to activate the machines.

So to recap, this year there will be a $25 attendance fee charged by the club and collected when you sign in after completing their liability form. Covid strikes again.

Well I sure wish I could join you this year but realistically not likely. Interesting the differences between a commercially operated range like you’re using and club ranges like we mostly have in the west. Your range charges $25 for guests, ours waives the range fees for first time guests to encourage more participation.

This is not being organized by the Oshawa Skeet and Gun Club so please do not contact them regarding our get together. They are simply being good enough to let us meet up at their club. Send me a PM if you have a question. Or post it here.

Before Covid there was no fee and they encouraged non members to use the club. Since Covid they have become members only and under normal circumstances allow one guest only per member in attendance. I don't think I'm wrong in saying there is probably not one gun range in southern Ontario that isn't over subscribed.

I am definitely in and looking forward to shooting with all you fine folks. While I attended the last even, I could not shoot due to injury. So I look forward to this years event. Thanks Canvasback!!

I'm also in!
Thanks Mike and James!
For anyone who has not been previously, you really should go. Fantastic guns and people will be there. $25 is great value.

I’m happy to chip in and help out to make this event happen.
How often do you get to see so many great sxs’s, and amongst such a knowledgeable group?
I’m looking forward to it!

Every year we hold a vote among all attendees to determine the Double Gun Classic Gun of the Year. There have been some really spectacular guns in the mix each year. Over the next number of weeks, I"m going to do a series of posts, each highlighting a Gun of the Year. All I can say about them in general is they just keep getting better every year.

The first year of our event was 2015, the brainchild of VictoryXC (Patrick). And it was Patrick who decided we should honour the most interesting gun each year. The 2015 GOTY winner was a 1921 Manufrance Ideal 12 gauge Grade 7R E/C. Some of you may have seen pics of it before. It's a 6 3/4 pound classic game gun with a straight stock of French Walnut and 29" barrels choked IM/Full. The Ideal has a unique opening/cocking lever at the rear of the trigger guard, leaving the lines of the top of the gun uninterrupted. This particular gun is a very high grade version with utterly unique engraving.

Wouldn't it be cool if the event drew enough interest to become a satellite event held at multiple clubs across Canada on the same date the way the Canadian Trap Championships were held and where livestreaming would be possible for the gun show viewing and gun of the year voting, awards etc?!! :shotgun::rockOn:

Too funny... I haven't logged into this site in a coon's age. Tonight I think to myself, "Its that time of year; I wonder of someone's gonna try another Double Gun Classic?". And BOOM! there it is, announced yesterday! Count me in :)

Congratulations on organizing this event, James. Its a long, long way from my home in Calgary but maybe one year I can make the journey. Most importantly, it would be great to meet with the collectors, many of whom I have met thanks to CGN.
The Calgary gun show is next weekend---the show was cancelled for 2 years due to covid---therefore, next weekend will be loads of fun meeting collectors and their fine guns, and hopefully lots of doubles.
Bill
