Thinking of building a petite deer/coyote calling rifle. Anybody done a 6x45 on a riihimaki L461? Is there room to seat an 85 grain bullet?

Depends on the bullet.......... Barnes may not

I have 2 6x45's one on a l461 action 1-10 twist Shilen and one a AI action, 1-8 twist Benchmark both shoot 80 gr Win cup and core bullets at approx 2800 fps, and 65 gr Hornady at close to 3000 fps .

Ditto what 357Maximum said- there's room in that mag, but not a ton. Remember it was originally developed for the .222 so even long .223 loads can be a squeeze. I run a .204 Ruger in a 461 Vixen, but length is limited for 40gr bullets.

Personally I wouldn't want to run the Barnes 80-85gr bullets out of the X45 anyway, as they're heavily dependent on velocity to expand and the X45 is just a wee bit slow especially at distance. I killed a pile of deer (8 or 9) with an 80gr TTSX out of my .243 Win, and found that expansion drops off sharply to near-FMJ performance at around 300 yards, which translates to an impact velocity of around 2400 FPS when started at 3300 from my .243. Out of the X45 started at 2800 FPS, that shortens your effective range for good performance to just 180 yards by my numbers.

Now the 85gr Sierra Gameking on the other hand... now that would be a winner :)

I've got a Cooper in 6x45, great we rifle, the 85 gr Serria soft point is a great performer for deer, I've shot a dozen with it, as is there 75 gr hollow point, Hornardy 87 gr soft point or hollow points are good at 6x45 speeds. 2750-2850fps. For this weight class in my 20" Cooper,
I think the magazine length limit is about 57mm in the l461 Sako, I've got 61 mm in the Cooper, you might be down a bit, on the above speeds, due to bullet seating deeper in the case to fit magazine.
I've got the 85 gr Serria and the 65 gr v-max dialled in to same point of impact at 200 m, 65 v max at 3100 fps , Cfe223 powder. 28 gr for the 85 gr, benchmark 27 gr for the v-max.
Very versitial little carry rifle,
Build one doubt you will be dissapointed,

Hopefully this is of interest to you
