To make a long story short, I no longer reload .243, but found a couple random bullets from when I did. I'm currently reloading for .223 and had the thought of stuffing the 6mm bullet into a .223 case. The only reason I didn't is because my dies are packed away already and I didn't want to pull them back out.

Out of curiosity I googled it to see if anyone else had this idea, turns out they did....back in 1965. They started calling it the "6x45mm". Turns out this was even being chambered in some ARs and used in some competitions.

Wondering if any of you guys have any experience with this or any other 223/5.56 wildcats?

I have a thread in the precision rifles forum regarding the 6x45mm................

reamer may be inbound shortly...........

Well then, I must not have done my search properly. I may have only searched the reloading portion of threads. I'll wonder over and see what was said there Dave.

Gunner, that seems to be all I've found. Most guys tend to be using it in areas where, much like Canada, 243 is the smallest legal hunting calibre for deer sized game.

No reason at all not to. Hell, I'd even use a MSR in .223 for everything smaller then coyotes if I could.

Right now I'm putting some thought into the 6x45 as a bolt gun. I know it'll probably never happen, but I still like the thought of it.....specially if I ever happen to shoot out my 223 barrel.

Bob Milek of G+A used to use a 6mmx.223 for mulies and antelope in a XP 100 BA pistol. And John Wooters a .25 Copperhead essentially a .25X.222 Harold

just neck up the 223 case.................

tossing a coin right now on a 6x45 based on the 223 rem case or a 6x222 rem for that nice long neck..........

I really like the 222 neck. I would also Improve the case a bit if I was getting a custom reamer cut. I really like Ackley cases though, once you get em sized properly and prepped, there's no trimming and you can load em a bunch of times before annealing the necks.

A caliber very similar to this has been around for a very long time, it is the 6x47 Remington, at one
time it was considered one of the most accurate calibers around, so much so that Remington chambered their 40X rifles
for the round, dies and loading data is around, basically it is the 222 Rem Mag necked up to 6mm.

i have an old Remy 788 in 222 that had a buggered barrel(yes i know hard to belive but it has happend) and i just ordered a barrel from Ted Gaillard a couple weeks ago.. The 222 necked up is the way im going. I think will be a fun little cartridge. i dont plan on killing anything but paper, groundhogs, coyotes and the odd empty beer can.. Accuracy is supposed to be excellent and barrel life will be HUGE!!! So im excited to get this thing put together and see how it shoots.. Should be a fun little rifle.
