6x47 rem Deer load drama

so in Victoria, AU- i have a min requirement of 80Grains in a 6mm projectile to be Legal"" for Fallow deer....................

i have the small little 6mm on the 222 Rem mag case necked up- AKA 6x47mm

i want to use it for Deer one day in the future, so i purchased a few 85gr Speer and 100gr grand slam and tried to form a load-

I was hoping the 85 gr Speer BTSP would shoot well -
it certinly isnt sub moa like the 75 gr HP...............

Question is, For the occaisonal Deer hunt, Small species Deer these Fallow are, im going to proberly need to keep shots relatively close- say under 250M, ideally 200m and in-

Will I get away with loading something that is printing say 1.5 inch Groups- (my mind says Yes, my head says No)

easy to get horny over half inch groups on paper-- i seem to be doing circles with development at this stage-

alternatively - i think 100gr maayyy just be a bit heavy for what im trying to do- they are GS, flat base.
im wondering if i need to find a 80-85gr FLAT base projectile to see if its the Boat Tail design throwing the ol girl off!?!?

even a 2 inch group proberly going to work here eh

i shoot the 85 gr serria in mine i have killed 4or 5 deer and one cow elk the elk was 115 yards and i put the bullet in its ear

What is the spin rate of the barrelling in your rifle? It might be a tad slow for the long heavy 6mm’s.

How many shots are printing in 1.5”?

T’were it me, I would shoot 10 or 15 and go off of that for a zero. Keeping in mind that with a properly zeroed rifle that is putting 10+ into 1.5”, you are only going to be at most 0.75” off of your point of aim at 100 yards.

At distance, you aren’t flinging an entire group of shots at an animal, only the average radius of your rifles group for any given shot.

If your rifle is truly grouping 3” at 200 yards and zeroed off of that - correctly zeroed with a large sample size, any shot you fire should land within 1.5” of your point of aim. Are you a good enough shot that you would be able to hold that precisely from a field position with the way the rifle is set up?

You’ll be fine with an honest 1.5” rifle out to 250m. I’d be more concerned with impact velocity and terminal results myself.

I would say if you do your homework like Kodiak suggested up to 200m wouldn’t be a problem unless the vital of such deer is the size of an apple….

Group size (extreme spread of worst 2 shots) can't really give you a probability of a hit.

Measure groups for mean radius, easy these days with cell phone camera app like Hornady's group analysis or Ballistic-X. MR takes every shot into account, instead of your worst two. A mean radius of 0.7moa will keep shots inside a conservative 8" diameter vital zone to 350 yards. Fire 10-15 rounds to get an idea of the capability of the ammo in your rifle, and you'll get some excellent info for a point of impact at the same time.
