...saw a guy with one at the range today......"4200fps with a 140"...so he says..so I said he must have a long barrel like about 30"...nope..."just 28", that's all you need"....I'm sure it was 28" with the brake....but he couldn't hit a 500ml bottle of water at 100 yards...."I have it sighted 14" high at 100 so it's right on at 300"........I don't need software to tell me this doesn't jive with a 140 at 4200....or even a 140 at 3300...no I didn't offer to let him run one over my chrony......why do I even go to the range this time of year?.....
 
B.S x2 I play with a guy at the range that has the warbird and firebird, you cant get that, I match his velocities with the 30-378 and my 7mm Rum.
The best velocity with pressure signs out of my Rum with a 130 gr bullet was 3760 avg over 3 shot and was minite of basketball!
He matched my velocity with about the same accuracy!
Plan and simple.
 
I ran 97 grs of rl 25 to get that velocity, but the load for the rum i shoot is 92 gr of rl 22 that shoots accurate and gets factory velocity of 3480 to 3500 fps

The rums case capacity is well over 100 grains as with the lazzies!

80gr of imr7828 in either of my 7mmstws gives me 3500fps with a 140gr bullet with groups averaging 1/2" to 5/8" depending on the bullet.My 7mmRUM only adds 50fps to 75fps with the same bullet for all the extra powder.

I worked that load up slow!
And yes 5.0 grains over max, no accuracy and I am not sure what the barrel went through LOL!!
Flattened the primers the whole deal,! Yep it was hot but still safe hot.
I thougth the chrony was brioken myself so I put a few 308 rounds over it!

There are guy on this board that can confirm it! as they seen it!
 
a guy has to wonder what real world advantage there is to pushing a 140 grain bullet past 3200 fps

The higher the velocity the less the bullet drop and the less the wind drift.In other words,higher odds of delivering that bullet to the correct location.
 
sounds like a wicked gopher gun, but 14 inches high at 100 to be dead on at 300? i think 30-06 shoots flatter than that, does it shoot .284 or something else

Sure, but at 3200 there's basically no drop out to 300 yards, which is as far as most of us mere mortals should even consider shooting at game animals. Hell my .30-06 with 180 grain bullets going 2800 fps only drops 7.5" at 300 (it's zeroed at 200), which is still well within the ol' 'pie plate' of vitals. And with a BC of .504 that bullet isn't drifting much.
 
like I said, real world advantage - not paper advantage (of course faster is flatter etc)

95% of hunters cant hit a milk jug from a field position past 300 yards anyways. Even with a 140 @ 3700, at 350 yards or more you have to know the distance and know your bullet drop, or you'll miss your target. a 7mm STW is not a magic wand for killing deer at 500 yards

so this Lazzeroni guy cant hit a bottle of pop at a hundred yards...it dont matter how fast his bullet is leaving the muzzle if he cant hit what he's aiming at - at close range - let alone 400+ yards where the oversized cartridges start to show their stuff

he is a classic example of mega magnum shooters, I've run into them too, and have posted about it on CGN :)

I have taken well over a dozen animals at over 300 yards and a few at over 400 yards with the farthest being 480 yards(from a solid rest under perfect shooting conditions).At those distances,my 140gr bullet leaving the muzzle at 3500fps drops less,and drifts less in the wind than your 180gr bullet leaving your 30-06 at 2800fps.And I do practise regularly at those distances and use a laser rangefinder as well.The 7mmstw is better suited to my uses than a 30-06.

I for one can do it quite consistently,as can a few other shooters at our local range.With regular practise,it isn't a big feat.Then again ,many people don't know their guns and loads,and don't practise.

The fact that they can't,is no reason for me not to take advantage of the flatter trajectory and reduced wind drift provided by the extra velocity of cartridges such as the stws and ultramags.
