I am looking for any and all info on the 7/30 waters. I am thinking about getting an encore barrel made by MGM in this caliber. Being a single shot rifle it will allow me to load “pointed” 7mm bullets. I have little experience reloading, I did some 308, 30-06 and 223 12 years ago and that it. I still have my set up and components so I will just need to get a set of dies. I was thinking it would make a nice little deer/ spur of the moment coyote gun. And I really like that it is different and not common.
Is there anything I need to know about the caliber?
Anything one with experience with the 7/30 please speak up, I want your info.

interesting round.

I would think that it would benefit from going with an Improved case

the neck is really long on the 30-30 and you can get a bit more case capacity with blowing out the shoulders

would make a good deer gun

I have a Winchester 94 in 7-30 Waters manufactured in the late 80's. Fired a few rounds at the range but never hunted with. Compared to my then Winchester in 3030 the 7-30 Waters could reach out further than 3030 with way more accuracy. As I said I have never hunted with the rifle but am told that it makes a great deer gun.

it would be awesome in a moddel 94! as above fellas mention, it would make a great Deer gun!

if making a new one, or single shot, having it Ackleyed out would be the go- i think it would be a perfect balance of powder and projectile to be honest haha!!

I had one for a while but did not keep it long as I was never a Model 94 fan. The case is essentially a necked down and blown oy 30-30 (improved) case. I didn't play with a lot of bullets but used the Hornady 139 gr back when they made it with a flat tip. There never was much of a selection of suitable flat tipped bullets for the tubular magazine. I guided a hunter that used a small Martini action rebarreled to 7/30 and that was a neat accurate rifle that could use pointed bullets and I would have kept something like that. I can't offer any information on loads or powder as I was only ever able to find 3 boxes of those flat tipped bullets but as I recall 3031 seemed the best that I tried.

Since your saying pointed bullets, you literally open up a world that M94 lever guys can't comprehend. Pointy bullets makes me think you could be what a 7x57 is at 100,150?, from the muzzle. Down to a 100gr bullet, providing its not designed for predators, would be skipping right along. Something light like that would also be right there with 6.8 spc. Load a 140 partition or accubond, again a awesome performer. Would have to look at velocity and energy numbers, but my thought would be the ethical distance for game would still be pretty short, 200 or 250.

The vast majority of what I've shot has been mule deer, 80ft to 80yds. I just hunt coastal rainforest and thick boreal. I tend to magnums, but this little round would work for those short ranges. The 10% it wouldn't would be places like pipeline right a ways, seismic, Prairre, or big cut blocks. Avoid those places, close, thick; that little gun would be short and light. A joy to take for a walk.

MGM makes great barrels, I have 357maximum , 7/08 and the 7/08 is a 308 based cartridge and it does all ..I know it is not a 7-30 waters but unless you love fire forming homemade brass from 38/55 ...do some reading on the cartridge on chuck hawks website.
I love the 7/08 with 140gr great killer of deer and coyotes here in Manitoba ...
Ron at nine35 might even have a 7/08 barrel in stock
