How does this one look?

.....From what I gather this revolver was highly regarded and was used into the early-mid 20th century. Which is quite impressive given the massive improvements in small arms in that period.

My only question regarding this firearm/ammunition is - It seems grossly grossly under-powered as a man stopping round. Why would the Swiss adopt such a pea-shooter as their standard issued side arm? ....

I think that video sums it up quite nicely, but I would say that if you reload, it doesn't matter... there's so much more potential. I honestly don't think the very early thin straps are that frail, and as BOTR indicates, the fear was gas cutting over time could erode the thinner strap antiques, as well as BP corrosion also wearing away at the strap... both are long term processes. RELOAD and enjoy.

It's a thin strap, no doubt about it. Reload to 32 S&W Long power levels and enjoy. I would try to source some Trail Boss and stick to 2.6 grains under a 100 grain lead semi-wadcutter. Check to make sure that the bullets clear the bore. I would not exceed 2.8 grains on an early antique.

A bit of G96 and some 0000 steel wool should clean up most of that staining and bring out the nice bluing (just don't be aggressive with the steel wool). The straw parts look excellent.

There is some external pitting from BP, but nothing to worry about. She's not mint, but will still make a great shooter

Yours has a P stamp on it. It means that it was sold to the soldier that it was issued to during their military service.

How hard is it to source Swiss BP? I wouldn't mind experimenting with some of it.

It's out there....somewhere.

Never actually seen any in the wild though.

PITA to get BP at all for the most part as it is an explosive, rather than a propellant. Lots of the dealers don't want to handle the stuff. That's been my experience, anyway.

Cheers

I Have what I think is a thin top strap model, wish I had known more before I bought mine I would have waited longer and looked for a thick top strap model. I wonder how much weaker they are, and if the loads at the start of the thread are safe for both thin and thick models.

Thanks

Unless you plan on shooting it a lot, it should not be an issue. Is there any sign of gas cutting as it came to you? or since?

Ok good to know. No signs of gas cutting. I don't plan on shooting hot loads so I should be okay.

I have well over 500 rounds through mine (99% using soft waxed lead bullets) and zero signs of gas cutting and the bore is mirror bright and like new. Some of my loads are quite "spirited". Your antique will give you generations of use if properly maintained.

Thanks. I actually have two boxes of H&N waxed lead wadcutters and they produce excellent accuracy. I may experiment with Swiss BP, but certainly up the charge to 14-15 grains and chrony.

For the selfish reason that I just ordered one of these from Corwin I'm going to bump it and make it easier to find for myself and for anyone else tempted by the '88's and '29's they are currently selling.

I think this is the 4th gun I use 32-20 brass for and only one is actually a 32-20!

So.... How'd you make out?

Well the revolver came in and needed a serious breakdown and cleaning but is in good shape except for a little pitting around the muzzle.

I had saved 100 W-W 32-20 cases to make shells but the rims are just a hair too thick and bound up on the recoil shield. Next thing I tried was to dig out some Starline 32-20 cases that were converted to 8mm French ordinance revolver and size them back down in a 30 carbine die. Those work fine so I took the only 20 empty cases and loaded them with Trailboss and powder coated 90gr swc. Now I'm at an impasse because I can't go to the range and test them.
Have an order of Starline cases coming in next week
