Good day!

Looking for any info in regards to a K31 deer hunting load.

I would like to use my surplus 1992 manufactured GP11 ammunition as a basis for creating some. I have pulled the FMJ's, and now I would like to know if anyone has any data on using either 150 or 180 grn. .308cal Nosler partitions with the original surplus powder charge? Or if you would recommend dumping it and replacing with another powder (I have a stockpile of IMR4350, IMR4064, IM3031, IMR4831 that I'd like to use)? Also, of course, what should my C.O.A.L be using the 150/180 Noslers in the K31?

The mentioned projectiles and powder are what I have on hand, but if any of these combos are not suitable, I am all ears.

Will be using a 1943 K31 + Swiss Products Mount + Leupold 1-4x scope w/ Leupold Steel Rings.

Thanks!

I haven't worked up a hunting load but I've had good results with IMR 4350 with 168 grain Hornady BTHP, I suspect 180 grain would be great as well with 4350.

I too would be tempted to use the original powder, is this gp11 174 grain surplus? You should be able to back off the factory powder charge by a few grains and work up from there with 180 grain boolits as long as your new bullet doesn't drastically change the seating depth/case capacity.

i would take 10 or 20 rounds of 174gr gp11 and see how much powder you get from all the cases then average them out so all cases have a even amount of powder. then reduce by 5%-10% and use the 180gr nosler bullet you want to use.

to find your COAL, take a sized case with 2 slots cut in the neck then barely seat the bullet you want to use into the case. put that in your chamber, close the bolt, then slowly pull the bolt back. that is your max COAL. reduce it by a bit and make some dummy rounds to see if it reliably feeds from your mag.

Doesn't matter who made the bullet. You load for the weight. I'd use the IMR4064 and the 150's for deer. Forget the original powder. You have no idea what it is. Mind you, if you load with 170 grain hunting bullets, you won't damage anything. Bambi won't know what bullet killed him and 4 or 5 grains difference won't matter.
