Is it just me or has anyone else ran across this, your at the range uncase your SKS, tt33 or mosin etc, and some moron turns their nose up because its under 800 bucks??? Every milsurp rifle or pistol I own or have fired cycles perfectly, rarely if ever jams, stovepipes, ftf, FTE, etc. And still very little respect, was blasting away today with my tokarev tt33 (awesomeness in my opinion) with ammo from 1954 stamped on the box having an absolute great old time, one guy was "surprised" I could get on the paper and another asked what I was shooting then responded, "oh, those are real cheap guns eh! Seriously!!! Just wanted to post the fact that I love my 7.62 guns and am quite content with the bashers staying away from, they keep our ammo and firearms readily available and inexpensive, let them continue to have no idea what they are missing and leave the milsurp fun for us!!!!

I love whipping out my cheap surplus guns that never act up on me, especially when the person next to me is shooting some $1500-2000 AR that misfires every other round.

Better part is out shooting them with a 70+ year old gun and just seeing the fire in their eyes.

Cant wait to take my SVT and Mosin out this Friday.

Yep, get that result . People chuckle. These are probably the same people who have to buy brand name items( even though some generic brands are made by the same companies ). Love the milsurps, designed for battle, not for looks!

I'm with you...In fact, I'm digging my soviet gear so much I just ordered a surplus Ushanka hat, complete with red star / hammer and sickle logo...Can't wait for winter now - shooting the SKS / TT wearing my new hat...

You must tell me where you ordered the hat from. Now. :)
Edit: I added a smily to not be too pushy, but I am serious, I would like to know.

Modern guns have no character, no personality, and no individuality. Namely the black gun variety.
Their owners claim to "build" them, which is a grievous overstatement and exaggeration. They are only buying accessories and screwing/boltiing/clicking them in place.
Its like an interior designer claiming to constuct the house.
When I get my R status, they only rifle I have interest in acquiring is an original late 60's early 70's Stoner.

I've become a real MN appreciator, after not fesiring them at all initially and heavily prefering the SKS. (Still a fav)
But the 5 shot limit on a semi is a real bummer for me.
I seem to get more "time" with my MN's when they are in my hands. Not so urgent or hasty with my shot placement.
Love working the MN action, as opposed to the action operating on its own. SVT40? They're OK. Neutered though.
I also like that the MN is very easy to strip and the mag is unmolested.

Heck, I even bought another ###y Ruskie today...

Check out soviet-power.com...was a little uncertain at first. Just ordered last week and they say it takes a few weeks to get to North Amaerica, but for $20USD and about $15 shipping (hopefully not much duty) thought it was worth the risk...if / when it shows up I'll post a pic.

I remember being 'That guy' who looked down his nose at the "Cheap POS Russian guns. 54 $! Really, what can you get for 54 $" listed in SIR.
Bought a M/N to impress my son who was a huge 'Enemy at the Gates' aficionado.
Turns out it was pretty cool.
The SVT's are too loud and the mag limit bites; not my thing.
The TT's; well the moniker says it all.
SKS's are like Fluffy Diva's and wine; what's not to like ( Jamaican Roughneck named Iyobei helped with the 'Fluffy Diva's' term...chubby ladies) about them?
Now I've an M-39 and love it

They are fun old gals

I take far greater pride in the deer I bagged this year with the SKS I spent the summer, off and on, fixing up, putting a rail on, doing some accurizing with, etc., that I ever could with some out of the box 1K purpose built hunting rifle.

Others take pride in emptying their wallet to brag about how much $$ they can blow on a rifle, then you watch them at the range, and they're the ones who tend to have the most trouble connecting with paper... Complain about crappy optics this, bad ammo that, and lousy rings, and that fargin useless gunsmith who set it all up.

I make a point of using my SKS for picking off the clays they set up[ on the back-berm to show off the "accuracy" of their rifle, then spend an hour missing before the complaints start.

If you get a good surplus rifle, strip it, clean out the cosmo, work on accurizing it... You'll get to know it far better than most of the big $$ spenders ever get to know their rifle.

Same for me fellas!

I've had guys snicker, make comments or strait up turn their noses up at my Milsurps. That's fine and I actually enjoy it because 99.9% of the time I take great pleasure in working them over on the range!!

My thoughts are as follows, I think the Russian military knew a thing or 2 about how to build a rifle. Russian guns are just fine the way they are, no need to change them.

And yeah one time a guy I know out shot me with his custom $3000 sako wearing a $1000 piece of glass. he beat me, I'll man up and admit it. He beat me by 1/4" on a 5 shot group at 100 yards. The rifle I was using was made in the early part of the 20th century and it has no optics.

But yeah he won, he sure SHOWED ME!! ;)

I hate to say it but its seems that most people are more into laser beams and gizmos then actually knowing how to shoot!!

Another guy I know who's all about the fancy guns wanted a semi auto so he bought a Keltec Sub2000. That sub2000 is kinda neat, it folds up and whatnot.

I on the other hand have my trusty sks, a rifle that I've left outside in -30 and it still fired after.

Long story short I've put 1000's of rounds through my sks without a single malfunction. My buddies Keltec is in his safe waiting for a trip back to Keltec. Why you ask because the plastic receiver cracked and is broken in half. PLASTIC RECIEVER???? I know, I'll never understand!!!

Mosin-Nagants used to be the "Ugly Betty" among MILSURPs and couldn't get much respect until people got to know more of their history and started to shoot and reload for them. Mausers, Springfields, Garands, M1 Carbines and various Lee-Enfields were the items of choice. I remember a guy begging me to buy a M27 Finn from him at a show until I broke down and gave him $50 for it. Turned out it had an excellent Tikka barrel which shoots .308 bullets very well and a nice trigger to boot. I've paid a lot more for Lapua brass for it than I paid for the rifle itself.

I think that the Swedish Mausers are probably the sleeper buy of today. They are very finely made, shoot very well and should not be overlooked.

I love my SKS enough that I bought two, might get a third... good cheap rifle that allows me to have more free money for ammo

I have to +1 the swedish mauser. I had to buy brass and dies to make it worthwhile but that gun is a sweet precision nail driver. It's now my fav over the lee enfield (I just wish it would hold 10 rounds too)

I concur as well. I consider them ballistic-ally superior to the 8 x 57 mm as well as better made.
Just no panache...

I must point out that, while I do love my trusty Russian milsurps, I do not buy expensive "big brand" items because I am looking to show off. I mostly shoot alone, on crown land, and I shoot my higher end firearms because they please me in a way that the cheaper guns cannot. Which is not to say they are a superior choice. It's a "the right tool for the job" kind of thing. this is just my opinion, of course.

As well, I would never turn my nose up at any firearm, no matter what they cost. Part of the thrill of shooting an SKS or SVT is knowing that the rifle is still running smooth and strong after 50 or so years. I respect the simplicity and ruggedness of the design. Conversely, the thrill of shooting some of my more refined rifles comes from the attention to detail - precise and smooth in build and function. If you bash someone else for their choices or means, you're a knob, and that works both ways.

And speaking of 7.62 how about a Mosin Nagant m38 fireball...:D
