7.62 kicks azz in my books

Awesome guys, glad its not just me, some great extra points brought up, history, hunting etc. Talked a friend into an SKS and we went out blasting away 2 weeks ago with his 15 yr old son, you want to put a huge smile on someones face, load up a SKS and hand it to someone to unload with the bayonet out, all that enjoyment and a memory he will never forget busting clays hanging on sticks with a semi auto 7.62 rifle. All for under 1 dollar to FILL the mag with 5 rds, personally it doesn't get any better, back to camp and clean the rifles up then enjoy a couple cold ones!!! I believe the old credit card ad read something like.........SKS $180.........ammo $20..........watching the smiles and enjoyment on someones face while shooting 100rds of 762.........priceless!!!!!!

I don't go to a bona fide range, but one of the pits I love to shoot at is very popular. Have only met gun snobs a couple of times, in a few decades. When encountered, it's usually nowhere near guns, or a place to shoot. Save once...one of my favourite shooting days of all times. My very objects of disdain (pair of 'ol Cooey 75s, Ljungman, and SKS) ended up stealing the show from some big number items.

Their rifles may have been more expensive, but the feeling after the shoot was priceless!

Growing up in an era when all things east-bloc were substandard by reputation (totally false assertion), my Dad always told me east-bloc guns were possibly the most robust of all. (followed by a joke:not only do they strike fear in enemies, but citizens too!). 30+ years later, it's proven time n' time again...not a thing wrong with them, and a lot right!

Nothing wrong with Swedes, or the venerable 6.5x55 so no surprises by their performance here. Wait until they get used in a movie or video game...prices will rocket.

Bravo! That's what it's all about!

Its actually kinda funny to see the number of SKS's out at my range!......I check to see the potential cost for some of the expensive long range rifle set ups that are in use (but being used at 100 or 200m only) and then I hit the 200m gong with old iron sights time after time...

The SKS I have never has a FTF or FTE or anything.....takes every type of ammo I care to feed into it and does its job as long as I do mine! To each his own for what type and expense etc but don't be critical of the interests of the person next to ya!

I bring cheap and Expensive at the same time to the range... Shuts everyone up.... and X39 is way easier on the wallet....

Whats weird is there's people out there that don't have a clue what a Tavor is.... Do these people live under a rock ?

I know what you mean about gun snobs, not that any of my fellow shooters in our club are snobs, far from it. Anybody standing around without anything to shoot stay that way fro as long as it takes one of the shooters to notice him or her. One guest on a guest day actually got to shoot NINETEEN different guns in under four hours, including BP rifles and hanguns..

No, what puts a smile on my face big-time is watching somebody come off a Volquartsen .22 supergun worth around $4500 and shoot my old Anschutz Model 1407 - a rescue gun that was going for scrap until I bought it.

For $50.00.

I particularly like the way that sks's pepper everyone on the range with hot brass casings. I LOVE to listen to a guy talk about how his sks can shoot the pimple off a rosebud at 1000 yards, and then completely ignore the curses and noises as their 1959 surplus ammunition lands in coats, shirts, sleeves, hair, bare skin....

It's all about perspective my friend :)

I remember using my Finn M91 to repeatedly hit the gong at 200 meters while these two guys on either side of me with Black TACTI-cool rifles just stared.....

Like to see them say they are surprised I can hit anything with this:

27/30 shots at this range: (look really close, the gong is there at the far side of that pit, about 700yds out)

I've shot it against an XCR at that range and the old No4 made the XCR look pretty cheap!

Or the running head shot on my doe last weekend at 150yds with my Long Branch No4 MkI*. This are high quality firearms that our Grandmothers made with love and care and trusted to keep as many of our Grandfathers alive as they could. There is nothing cheap or junk about them.

Interesting thread.
Maybe our range is an oddball. Almost every time I go to the range there is always someone with a Russian milsurp. I've never had anyone look down at me for shooting cheap ($) rifles. I've had comments on how load my SVT is but it usually follows with a smile. There are days when everyone on range were sporting Soviet milsurps.
What I find with the old milsurps , each gun has its own personality and quarks. Once you figure out its personality Bob's your uncle. The dings and scratches milling marks and smell make these rifles very interesting IMO. I comment on my friend Dave's Mosin. Every time he shoots that rifle it gives off this old smell, I don't know why, it's not arsenal fresh. It smells like age and history it's part of that rifles personality.

Oh man, that's the Holy Grail right there! Thanks for sharing those pics, Brother!
