7.62 Question

I have some left over M14 ammunition 7.62 NATO. Is it ok to shoot it out of my Savage 10 fp 308 ?

...some milsurp ammo is loaded with very hard primer cups and may be a little difficult to ignite by some "sporting arms".....try it and find out.....

7.62x51, 7.62 NATO, and 7.62 Long are three names of what works with .308

7.62x39 or 7.62 Short is the one you don't want.

Sorry but I've never heard of those rounds used with the terms long and short, the .308 uses a .308" bullet and the 7.62x39 uses a .311 or .312 bullet.

The 7.62 x 51 Nato can successfully be used in .308 win as the maximum CUP pressure of the nato round is roughly 50000cup. This will be well under the maximum pressure allowed in a .308 which is about 62000cup (copper units of pressure) The opposite is not advised (shooting a .308 win cartridge out of a 7.62 x 51 nato firearm as the action is not built to withstand the pressures generated by the .308 win. You may have an EYE OPENING EXPERIENCE.

myself and the hordes of other m14 owners out there use .308 win in 7.62nato rifles all the time........ maybe it's an exception to the rule but it is by no means a safety issue.

What about the good old 7.62X63? Better known as .30-06. I have naver heard of the 7.62 Nato round referred to as the 7.62 Long.

Works fine in my dad's model 98 7.62 israeli mauser.

I didn't say it was forbidden to use .308 win in military rifles, it is just that THERE IS A HIGHER PRESSURE LEVEL in .308 win and it is a lottery in regards to which action can take that pressure and which cant. I am sure the vast majority of military actions can take it, but they weren't designed to. I am just passing on a tidbit that I know is true. No one has to listen to it, and if you guys shoot .308 out of your guns and it works, more power to you.
