... I'm looking to equal the standard (or match ) NATO Loads using IMR 3895 Powder. So, I need to know the "standard" NATO bullet weight and velocity. For match results, I'd use a Boat-tail projectile, but other than that I'd just like to duplicate the standard current,Military "load" . Suggestions/in-put appreciated ! .... David K.

That IVI ammo used a normal 147 gr. full metal Jacket spitzer boat-tail bullet. Not sure on the Velocity. Around 2700 FPS..

.... Thanks RobertMcC ! That's about what I remembered, but it's been ages since I've reloaded .308 ! ..... David K.:)

I fired many of Thousands of rounds of IVI 762 Nato and I dont even remember the specs anymore LOL.

What you must remember is the published velocity of 7.62 NATO is 2800fps. This however is from a 20 inch barrel. The same round will produce about 2930-2950 fps out of a 30 inch tube.

Thanks, I was wonderng what type of Vel I would get out of my 27" tube and 24" tube.

Yes, a bit faser then a 20 inch barreled gas operated rifle. Now there is some thing to test, 20 inch self loader Vs. a 20 inch bolt gun. I wonder how much velocity is lost to cycling the self loader?

None. I just finished reading a report comparing gas port pressure on a Garand of Lake CIty Milspec ball to SAMI commercial 30-06. Pressure at the gas port was between 7000 and 9000 PSI. The small amount bled off at that point doesn't make any difference.

Nato spec is 2750 fps at 78 feet from the muzzle.

I cronyed an Indian NATO round and got 2821 about 10 ft from the muzzle.

I've chronyed factory whitebox Winchester FMJ .308 and got2713,2751,2745,2738,2757,2775,2758,2755,2734,2770.
The yellow box Remington UMC 150 FMJ .308 was 2844,2780,2776,2856,2740.

7.62 Nato

.... Rather than search the Manuals/Catalogs, (being lazy !) .... which, if any , company is producing a "match grade" 147 grn. FMJ/BT ? .... lots of 150 grn. stuff listed, which would probably be the closest. In advance thanks ! ..... David K.

.... 'Trouble is, I don't have chrono, and right now, can't afford one either ! ( Christmas, wife, kids etc.etc.! Bah Humbug !!) ... David K.:(

Dug this up from way back (I believethe source was precision shooting...but I could be wrong)
Civilian equivalents (using IVI brass) with 150 FMJ bullets
Win 748 - 45.5 grn
IMR 3031 - 39 grn
IMR 4895 - 42 grn
IMR 4064 - 44 grn
As always start 10% below and work up
Hope that helps

.... Thanks "TuckerO5 ! That covers it pretty damn well ! I'm a very cautious "handloader" and never load to the MAX ! Thanks again! Once the temperature rises above the current , minus 25Cel., I'll hit the Range, with a few handloaded, "new" 7.62 rounds ! .... David K.

Then it will be pretty tough to know if you are right on with the load. You could try just loading for POI. Shoot at various ranges using the same bullet and you will be about right.
