My buddy and I finally made it out to his gun club that has 8 different types of ranges; from an archery approved range, long range rifle, through to a handgun/shotgun/rifle action range.

We got the green flag approval from the range officer to set up the gong we brought and chose range #4 - 100/200 yard range - to set it up at.

I knew the cheap surplus ammo for our SKS's are steel core and could probably defeat light body armour, but had no idea and wasn't expecting it to cut through the gong's steel at 200 yards like a blazing hot knife through fresh churned butter. :eek:

Yeah, chances are a mild-steel fire-bell(?) isn't going to stop much beyond .22 LR. To stop centrefire rounds you'd be better off with plate at least 3/8" thick and preferably hardened.

Pretty cool though.

Yeah i also did some gong showing last time at the range, There was a plate 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch, both were mild steel, but it went through the 1/4 like nothing, and into the 1/2 about 2/3 of the way. So i would say it would go through 3/8 inch mild steel to. You need to use harder steel or you will break the gong, which is exactly what i did too.... the surplus 303 Br i have also performed the same.

Exactly. I shot up some 5/8 mild steel at 100m with a bunch of different rounds......5.56 SS109, Czech x39 and x54, 6.5x55, and 30'06.
Everything punched a hole through it except the x39.
The silver tip x54 has a pretty sesious core....the jacket would actually stick in the plate and the core would punch right through. We recovered one, and the tip was a little flat, but other then that it was unmarked. I can take some pics if anyone wants.
 
I think the mild steel core in the surplus Czech ammo is there as more of a cost saving measure. I don't think it is any better at penetrating steel plate then regular lead core ammunition.

yep , if you actually pulled one and disected the bullet itself you can tell the core isn't shaped in a way to penetrate.
