7.62 Tokarev vs 30 Mauser questions:

Can i use the 7.62 Tokarev dies and brass, and 30 cal bullets (ie. 90 or 110 gr) for 30 Mauser? assuming that i will be using 30 Mauser load data?

i mean i already have the 7.62 Tokarev dies and brass, and i don't have to look for the 30 Mauser stuffs if the Toks are okay.

Thx in advance!

The two are very close, but not identical. You can use the 7.62 brass, but the 7.62 Tok dies will not put the shoulder position where it should be, and you won't (likely) be able to chamber the rounds in your 30 Mauser chamber. However, they are close, and tolerances sometimes overlap. You have the stuff - just try it....

Thanks for the link, OneBarfly.

it seems that the only possible choice for brass is starline (and this is the only brand i can find so far).

according to the information from the link, the lengths of both starline cases (7.62 Tokarev and 30 Mauser) are not quite the same as the standards lengths i found from wikipedia and surplusrifles.

wikipedia and surplusrifles give:
- 30 Mauser = .99
- 7.62 Tokarev = .97

and starline gives:
30 Mauser O.A.L. = .980 to .985
7.62x25 O.A.L. = .959 to .962

seems like starline cases are a bit shorter than the standard ones...

i don't know if it's a big deal or not, for that .01 significance in length.

it would be great if i can just get one kind of cases from starline and use them in the 2 types of guns. if yes, which one will that be?

sorry about it if my question sounds foolish, but i am a newbie in reloading....so... :p

If you must, then choose the shortest one, but you'll need both sets of dies.

These are two very similar, yet distinctly different rounds. That's why different brass and die sets are available.

Good thread.:)

I just bought a Tokarev TT33. I have aquired some .30 Mauser brass (scrounged at the range):D
I will also be ordering some 7.62 X 25 Starline brass.

I thought that I would order the Lee 7.62 X 25 Dies. I think this will reform the Mauser brass to Tokarev specs. I will also be using the Lee Factory Crimp die.

Am I correct to assume this?

Of course there are tolerances in brass, dies and pistol chambers, but I suspect that you will need to size the 30 Mauser brass in the 7.62x25TT dies and trim by a few thou for it to chamber. The first firing will fireform the shoulder forward and reduce the length a bit, after that it's as if it was 7.62x25 brass.

Howdy

I reloaded for .30 mauser using mauser and tok brass, with Lee and RCBS dies in .30 Mauser. Shot them in both a Mauser and Tokarev pistol with no problems. The only thing I would do again is NOT use Lee dies. They suck compaired to RCBS dies in this caliber.

I have more details in the ammo section of the above mentioned mauser websight.
