I was in my local gun shop yesterday and asked the owner to order me some more Hornady 123 gr. bullets in 7.62 x 39. I have been loading for my son's SKS for the last year or so and had planned on getting my own rifle in that calibre but had run out of the bullets.
He phoned his supplier and after a lengthy conversation he hung up and said sorry but you won't be seeing those bullets any time soon. According to his supplier the US just imposed a ban on exporting bullets of that calibre out of the country. Has anyone else heard about this? Can anyone tell me why they would do that if it is true?

The US govt. currently bans the sale of military caliber (5.56, 7.62x39, 50 BMG) ammunition and some components to Canada except for law enforcement or military sales. This has been on going for the last couple of years. Most of the military ammunition in these calibers now is from Europe or Asia. This ban in interpreted for each individual export application and sometimes some items get through. Phil.

That may be true but I can buy 55 gr. fmj's by the case from various outlets and they are manufactured in the US. But I can't get what is classified as a hunting bullet anymore. These aren't fmj's.

I should know by now that there isn't a logical explanation.

Gee, don’t you feel safer and more secure now. All these paramilitary and illegal terrorist organizations in Canada will not be able to reload that caliber any more. $###@$#

well 7.62X39 in the round, not the bullet. What you're after is .30Cal 123grn bullets and they should be available everywhere.....

I had a thread on this also.A friend of mine who owns a gun shop told me his suppliers told him the exact same thing(I didn't realize it included components). He has even gone so far as asking an American friend to bring him up two cases for his customers(should be here this weekend).Thats customer service.

Yesterday I called eleven places that sold ammo. Some said the same thing, and they wouldn't have any for hunting season.A few said it was on back order:rolleyes:.Of the eleven I called two had some old stock,so I went out and bought all they had.I got fifteen boxes or Rem,and Win softpoints.

Apparantly it is true that the U.S has banned Export of 7.62X39 from what I can figure out.
You can still buy Ingman, and Sellar&Bellot from people who carry these brands as they are not made in the U.S.I do however suggest
you buy now, because prices will skyrocket on these brands due to this U.S ban.

I am looking forward to the prices of Mini-30s to come down due to this(my son wants one).I can always go State side and buy a case of soft point ammo.

He brings ammo across every year the week before deer season. He claims that he has ammo and his firearms, and has never had a problem. He has only got a pemit to bring the guns across for hunting season(i think it $25 a gun). Not the ammo.

I have been phoning around as well. I got a call into a large sporting goods store in Calgary. They had 3 boxes left and I got them. Family will pick them up as I'm not in Alberta but they said those were the last of them for awhile. As CaptOnion mentioned you can still get them from European manufacturers but I have no idea who sells them in Canada.

I hadn't thought about Mini-30's going down in price but it sounds good to me.

I don't think you need to panic. To bad about the hunting rounds being dropped. But the X 39 Ammo importers have way to much inventory in the pipeline to start jacking prices and lose customers. There has to be a few warehouses across the ocean holding stock for the distributors.

True...in a little while you might see a small increase.. But I don't think a case of X 39 will hit $300 anytime soon. Unless the dealer is money grubbing scum.

Forgive the ignorance but is there a round one could use instead? I know some calibers are somewhat interchangeable. It would really suck if I can’t get ammo for my SKS.

Also does anyone know if this applies to .556 or .223 ammo as well? It would suck even more if I could not shoot my M-4 in addition to my SKS!!

You are talking FMJ rounds. That stuff wasn't comming from the States to start with.I'm talking soft point ammo for hunting going way up in price, and it will.Mark my words!

I heard today from the guy at Lebaron's that they could not get any 5.56 any more, but still can get .223.

I heard only the us companys haulted making it for the time being. I think like all the other compaines are still putting it out in production???

The U.S didn't quit making 7.62X39.They just arent exporting it to anyone.
My buddy got a bunch of soft point stuff from Serbia to keep his customers happy.I am not sure if its .311,or .30 cal.I guess it would't matter in an SKS,but no so sure about a Mini-30.
