Does anyone know anything about the crates of surplus at cabela's? It says Romanian, 1300 rnds non corrosive, about $260. I asked the salesman if it was non corrosive, and he said it was, but what else was he really going to say? From what I understand, its removed from the spam cans, and not on stripper clips.
That price just seems too good to be true for non corrosive.

I was lucky and after some discussion ,they opened up a crate and i got a look at it. It is definitely different than the stuff i got at Lebaron's as non-corrosive, so i bought a case. Going to do the nail test in a day or so and see...

What sort of ammo did you buy, del? Case markings/headstamp info would tell the tale.

All surplus ammo I have looked at in edmonton cabelas is corrosive ! Most of it was steel core also so some ranges don't accept it but its fun to shoot at steel targets!

I have seen 7.62x39 in the tin ammo cans at cabelas as well was 800 rounds for $300 or something crazy like that. That stuff is non corrosive.

I ordered a case from Lebarons last spring, advertised as non-corosive, 2 e-mails they insisted it was non-corosive, so then did a nail check and it was corrosive, they changed the ad after some more complaints, the new stuff from Cabelas is in the right, head stamps are the same...maybe mix up at the factory for Lebarons order?

It's the same stuff except for the case material. The Romanians seem to have used brass in limited amounts for some unknowable Commie reason. And it's still corrosive.

Some of those look like brass.. I also got a case of brass in 7.62x39 @ 206 dollars from lebaron last winter.
Going to save the brass and reload one day when I get the dies and have the time.

Actually it is corrosive. Cabela's lies about this. I bought some because they said it was non corrosive. When I opened it it was S&B (Czec) 1982 surplus. Guess what, all commie surplus from that time was corrosive. I tested it and sure enough, it's corrosive. Quelle surprise!

If you look at the links I posted it says non corrosive. also on the federal site same thing. THey do sell surplus in crates but also federal stuff in ammo cans.

Federal stuff in the ammo can is current non-corrosive production. The other stuff isn't.

East bloc surplus= corrosive. New production= non-corrosive. Few exceptions, not worth mentioning. Don't worry, flush with water, clean, oil, store.

I picked up a case of the Romanian surplus (brass as pictured above) at the Edmonton Cabelas and it is great ammo so far. I've fired a couple hundred rounds of it with nary a misfire and it is as accurate as I am, although I am only using iron sights. Wasn't a bad deal at $259 for 1320 rounds. It's definitely corrosive, you can smell it as soon as you crack the crate! They had a huge pile of those crates three weeks ago and it was gone in a week. Not sure if they have more now or not?
