7.62 X 39 Decent deer cartridge?

A better option is a mosin nagant of some varaity, you have the ability to use it on moose, bear ect then(allot more range). I would pick something that was worked over by the finns with a decent bore, igman sofpoints work well for deer. Hell its still my favorite even though I have browning winchesters, savages to choose from.

I would stay away from the comblock sofpoints, I havn't had one preform like I thought it should. I think its due to the tough steel jacket. I shot two deer with an sks (small does), they both droped on the spot, but the wounds look like it tumbled after 2 or 3" of penatration.. wich was effective none the less.

For the record while I will be hunting with my SKS this year, I do consider my 30/30 a nicer Rifle to pack in the brush. :)

I have a pdf of a deer commission for scotland advice sheet on shot placement when the deer is at different angles, pm me with your e mail and I'll send it over, ignore the legal stuff as thats for the jocks and sporting sassenachs but it is very good.

Not that I have minded sending these e mails but I have worked out how to copy and paste from pdf's at last:
deer1.jpg

There are a lot more and anyone who is interested I can post them perhaps in a thread on Deer management. They mainly apply for scottish deer but there are some good hints and tips.

so a 123 grain bullet @ 2380 fps is equal to a 170 grain bullet @ 2150 fps???
I think mine have to make 2500 fps here to get in the ME limit for deer. I'll have to check.
