7.62 x 39 surplus ammo comparision questions

Much better than surplus, which my comment was about.

Agreed. The commercial Norinco and Dominion ammo is better than surplus in every way. The good thing about surplus is that it's ..... SURPLUS. Countries sell it at low prices just to get rid of it. Hard to beat 1400 rds for $200.

I shoot Czech surplus regularly at 200 yards with SKS at 12" x 12" steel and hit majority of time. Iron sight. Thin front Tech Sight, rear Tech Sight 200.

I think the thin post helps a fair bit.

Did your replacement of your sights make a big improvement or just a small improvement? Are they easier to see and use?
I'm thinking about getting a peep sight because Ganderite recommends them as being easier for old eyes to use - who sells them?

I think it's a big improvement. "Aiming smaller" seems to help a fair bit with the SKS. It certainly doesn't make the gun any more accurate but I'd say it makes ME more accurate with the gun.

I want to try the MOJO rear peep sight and compare to the Tech rear peep sight. If I can do about the same with the MOJO will be going with that to make disassembly easier.

One of the most important things with getting solid hits at "longer" ranges with the SKS is what you zero it at. Most guys seem to go with either 50 or 100 yards and that is completely wrong for this round/rifle IMO.

ok I'll bite. What is the completely right way to set up an SKS?

Sorry, would have wrote it out in last post but my 4 yr. old was crawling all over me and it was difficult to type.

Run the average numbers for surplus 7.62 x 39. If you choose your round to be on average no more than 4" above and 4" below line of sight to target the trajectory gives you first zero intersection at 19 meters, second zero intersection at 170 meters with drop about 4" below line of sight after 170 meters to 200 meters.

This gives you a maximum point blank range of 200 meters.

Confirm your hits at 5m, 10m, 15m, 20m, 25m, 50m, 75m and every 25m out to 200m. You will see it works very effectively for this round and rifle.

After you have done all this you will realize 50m and 100m zero for SKS/7.62 x 39 is inferior to the 19m/170m zero.

I shoot the Czech ammo. It goes bang every time and accuracy is as good as any other surplus. Besides being on stripper clips the ammo is very well sealed in heavy plastic so moisture contamination is no problem. I have never had any problems with lacquer finish in my SKS. One more thing to note is that it sure smells when fired.

out of my xcr-l it around 1.5/2 inch 5 shot grouping ,

Hi there; You have a xcr-l in 7.62x39 and you are able to get two inch groups at 100yards using iron sights? That sounds great. I will have to think more about getting a different rifle. Although I really like my SKS' it would be fun to be able to be really accurate and if I can accomplish that with affordable X39 I should give it a try.

OOPS! I didn't know how much an XCR-L costs. I will have to rethink this.

My Zastava M85 from Canada Ammo can do 2" or less at 100M with surplus on the cheap. Often with the right surplus I get 1.5 or slightly less.

Does your Zastava M85 have a smooth acting bolt? My Mosin bolt is so stiff during shooting (loose and smooth during non-shooting) that I wonder if I want to bother to get another bolt action. But the M85 would certainly be in the right price range.

Too be honest it was very stiff at first but it has loosened up since I ran a couple hundred rounds through it. It feels quite nice now! I had a slight high spot on the stock that was contacting the barrel when passing a canadian tire 10 cent bill underneath so I sanded it so it was free floated. I'm sure it helped this rifle with it's accuracy. Mine is the sporter version without irons so I have it scoped.

All in all it's a little roughly built but I have had a blast shooting cheap ammo out of it. I'm quite happy with it now. I use it to practice my target shooting technique so when I get to use my nice rifle and expensive ammo I'm on the ball. 200-300 rounds through a bolt action in a day is quite a lot of fun, and when it's 7.62X39 it only cost you $26 in ammo for the whole day!

not with the iron sight , i got a good scope, 6-18x on it and using a bipod and that all ,

I can hit a big shaped gong very regular with my 1950 refurb sks bone stock with iron sights.
Can't hit quite as well with my 1954 non refurb.
My vz58 is deadly accurate with the Czech surplus.
