It's more powerful then the .357Mag, and that cartridge takes Deer every season in the USA in handgun, and Carbine hunts.

Also plenty of deer have been killed with the 7.62x39 cartridge.

The .30-06, .308, .303 British, 7.62 x 54, 7 & 8mm Mauser, 6.5 x 55, .223/5.56, .45-70, 7.5 Swiss, 9mm Parabellum(and most other 9mm's), .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .38 Special and a host of other cartridges all started as military cartridges.

sunray posts on so many different forums he just uses that technique by default, he's on lots of firearms related forums here and stateside. In a way I can understand, he just uses one method everywhere and keeps things simple, as a bunch of the boards operate differently.
 
I would be more than comfortable using it here in Central Ontario where the longest shot I have made on a deer was 75 yards.

I tried out a Ruger 77 and it was a very accurate combination.

:p Well Pardonez moi if it seems like a stupid question!

I ask because I've been casting about for different options for a small carry rifle. One of the rifles I've been looking at is the CZ Carbine, which just happens to come in a 7.62 x 39. I've never really considered this cartridge before, as I always thought it was just a spray and pray round for the sks crowd. ;)

it is best for shooting people
 
I use it for deer where a fifty yard shot is average; they don't seem to have that nice big wallop like a 308 but they shoot flatter than a 30-30; plus, if you miss the first shot, ya got 29 more where that f***er came from!!.... but we all know that wouldn't be legal!!:p
 
At close range with proper bullets and with practice, you should be able to hunt whatever you want with it. It's not a full powered 30 calibre rifle round, so don't treat it like one and you'll be okay. I don't think it's anybody's first choice "If I had only one rifle..." cartridge, but it can kill whatever you want humanely if you do your part.
 
i think i will buy a cz 527 for the wifey less recoil and effective enough against deer my wife making a good hit with a 7.62-39 is better than a miss with my 7mm or 3006

I've got a custom Savage in 7.62x39, and it's one of the more accurate rifles that I own. In a bolt action, you can load it a little bit stiffer, and seat the bullets a little farther out. Wat a 30-30 can do, so can the x39. Actually, by the time it gets fifty yards downrange, a 168 grainer at 2000fps out of the x39 is moving faster and carrying more energy than a 170gr FP from a 30-30 at 2100 fps.

That said, it wouldn't be my first choice for anything more than 100-200lbs (but neither would a 30-30)
