7.62 X 54R.. Not to field a dumb question, but is this the same as a .308 win?? I've heard somewhere that it was. Anyone??

No, similar performance to the .308 and .30-06, but entirely different cartridge.

Many people think the .308 winchester and 7.62x51 NATO are the same thing, which they nearly are. Are you sure that was not what you were told?

The 'r' denotes "rimmed", on which the Russian cartridge is as opposed to the .308/7.62x51 rounds.

On the subject of .308 win vs 7.62x51, there are different head-spacing and powder loads for both. North American commercial ammunition will not be loaded as hot as surplus 7.62, which can be liable to blow up some rifles.

Not only a different case, but:

7.62 Russian is .311 caliber, and

7.62( North American) is .308 caliber.
