7.62 XCR Experiences

I'm debating getting one of these to replace a couple of rifles I don't shoot enough and I'd like to know what your experiences have been with them. Which surplus blasting ammo would you recommend or avoid, will these things hold 4 moa with surplus ammo, how well do the pistol mags feed, etc.? Tell me about the good, the bad, and the fugly of this rifle and ammo combo.
 
I assume you mean 7.62x39?

I have one from the original batch that came in. Fantastic rifle. I used to shoot primarily MFS cheap-o stuff, but have switched to Chinese surplus for the time being. Both work fine. I wouldn't say it is particularly accurate using milsurp ammo, but I shoot with zero magnification, so my expectations are low beyond 50 yards. At 50 yards I can consistently get 10 rounds in a 3 inch circle.

+ Rifle is well built, despite early QA issues. I've not used a drop of loctite!
+ 10 round 7.62x39 magazines!
+ Rifle is super easy to clean - easiest I own
+ looks cool
+ non-restricted
+ Cheap ammo
- Front heavy, but I guess it's not a carbine
- 7.62x39 ammo is pretty much always 123-125 grain FMJ or SP. There isn't a significant amount of variety which limits you to a certain degree.

I'll say this, the XCR is fantastic.
If you want accuracy and somewhat inexpensive ammo, go with the .223
If you want accuracy and hunt medium size game, go with the 6.8 SPC
If you want super cheap ammo, go with the 7,62x39

Agree completely.
Have switched to using the Norinco, non-corrosive, surplus for now, but would have no qualms using up the 5-6 crates of Yugo surplus either.
The 10 round pistol mags seem to run without a hitch.
No complaints......
 
Rifle is closet to 2000 rounds and the pistol is just about 1500 since July, hitting 8" pipe plates and 4 litre milk jugs with nothing but irons.

I shoot Czech surplus exclusively with no problems at all.
 
What the other guys said. Only problems I had were when I had it on the wrong gas setting (4) and that was only for about 20 rounds (3 failures) until I figured it out, then was fine.
 
Thanks for the info fellas, much appreciated. I did mean 7.62x39, I was trying to keep the headline short and concise. I'm looking to use this rifle for cqb practise/courses/competitions and general screwing around when I need a break from lying in the dirt and going long. My long range aspirations have me shooting less at the range and more in the country side where my AR dare not tread.

I would probably recommend the 223 for what you want. Unless you want to do the odd deer hunt with it then the x39 would be OK. You could always buy one then get the other kit after. That's what I did, 223 first then x39 after I broke the gun in and was sure it was a good one. Not sure if I want to bother with 6.8 yet as I never shot one and ammo supply was not the best there for a while, but may get one soon to try it.
 
I'll wind up with a 223 conversion either way; I shoot indoors a lot in the winter and have a bucket load of brass for reloading. The allure of 7.62x39 for me is the cost of ammo I don't have to load myself; I work 65-70 hour weeks in the summer, time is precious and the season is short.
 
If you are planning to shoot as cheaply as possible and plan to use corrosive surplus just make sure you clean it really well after every session or you will turn a $2000 rifle into a POS.
I personally wouldn't shoot corrosive through one but that's your decision to make if you buy one.
I have never owned one but have shot a couple of them and know 4 guys with them and they were all happy with them but 2 of the guys have sold theirs lately.
The biggest complaint I've heard other than the screws falling out of the earlier ones is that they are heavy. Other than that they seem to be fairly accurate but don't expect MOA without handloads.

i own an XCR in that caliber and it runs great. no FTF or FTE's and fun as heck to shoot.
