The barrel on one of my Garand has seen its time, however this would be a perfect occasion to rebarrel it to a .308 Garand.

I've heard it is not an easy feet & would require minimal mods to accomodate such a barrel.

Any advice would be appreciated & am not sure if I want to ''National Match'' it either, I kinda like the weight it is at the moment.

Of course I would need to find a barrel first :)
 
Brutus on this form has a M1 Garand in .308. I think it was used in tanks. He had problems with it and figured out how to make it work properly.Might shoot him a PM. He might be in the process of moving from Nova Scotia back to Alberta so might take him time to respond.....Ken
 
Re-barrelling the Garand to 308 is not a big job - Epps had Citadel barrels (short chambered) that work OK. I've done 3 conversions with no problems.

Dave GP has it right.
I had a .308 Citadel barrel installed on Springfield M1 a while back. The barrel was out of Montreal and it was breached up in Edmonton. Both the barrel and the gunsmithing were reasonably priced. The only other mod's that were done was the addition of a cartridge stop spacer block ( from Brownells ) and a Amega ranges scout mount , the former is necessary . We had two rifles done at the same time and both of them perform flawlessly . BTW both were equipped with Mcann adjustable gas regulators that allow us handloaders to ballance out the recoil against the FTE's . This is a worth while
and rewarding project !

Done many of these conversions with both Citadel (really great) and Douglas NM Barnett turned (really great and inside an MOA shooter).

Have at 'er!! My only complaint is that after I go and rebarrel them, test fire them, and sometimes compete with that unit; people make me offers I cannot refuse (and they know I'm afflicted with 'rifle ADD'. (attention deficit disorder :D)

I have one of these that was rebarrelled by another CGN'er.
It wouldn't cycle and after doing a google search found that the gas ports for the 7,62 should be larger than for the .30/'06.
The wrinkle is that many 7,62 barrels have the smaller hole.
I opened it up a bit and get 99% functioning with SA ball ammo.
I don't have the numbers off the top of my head right now, but I can go up another two or three drill sizes if I have to.
Brownells have the proper sized drill bits.
Mine works just fine without the spacer in the magazine for the shorter cartridge.
 
Brutus found that he did not require the spacer block, his 'tanker' worked just fine without it, as long as you used 7.62X51 mm equivalent loads. Oops slug you beat me to it! ;) - I can say though, that his 'tanker' was one sweet shooting and serious rifle. - O brother where art thou? :)

Yes I concur with the above posts. If the gas port is the right size, nothing else matters! :cool: :cool:

PS: When I initially received this rifle, there were many issues unrelated to the calibre.
Examples: Bedding problem, weak clip latch spring, and a bent operating rod catch assembly.
With Silverback's kind assistance, we soon had this 'tanker' humming along, like any other good Garand! Referring back to the port size proper for 7.62 NATO, I have seen two port sizes mentioned in my tech' manuals: 0.087 & 0.0875.........

"...think it was used in tanks..." No. "Tanker" M1's were never used by anybody. They were an experimental thing only. Any existing examples were made up by somebody. Who did it has a lot to do with whether or not it actually works.
I've seen .090" mentioned on-line for the gas hole. The .087" is the right diameter though. .0005" to .003" wouldn't matter much.
 
I have done a few, the one I still have has a Barnett hb. Hungry is correct, they are really great barrels. Surplus 7.62 has gotten scarce and expensive. Fortunately I have a couple of cases left, and a few thousand IVI once fired cases.

Hopefully Obama will shut down all milsurp imports to the U.S., and availability and price will improve.

So true, this could be OUR perfect time machine!

I remember in the mid-90s, in Saskatchewan. There were alot of wonderful surplus 6.5 & 8mm Mausers around, real cheap. They were prevented from shipment to the USA, unless they were police issued rifles due to the 1968 GCA.
Sometime then, that all changed, and these nice long guns were soon classified as curios and relics stateside.
Viola, suddenly all the nice 6.5's & the cheap surplus ammo headed south to the USA market!

Actually if you have been following the various surplus ammo posts made by several importers you will see that it is virtually impossible to get surplussed ammo approved by explosives branch. They are asking for propellant and primer manufacturing info that is often no longer available.
 
Swampy, these are just some of the laws that were initiated 6 or 7 years ago. If the bereaucrats were allowed to implement all of the laws or actually had the funding to do so, you would more than likely have to account for every round you buy and all materials used in handloading. There are enough laws on the books, right now to totally cripple anything related to firearms. They just don't have the funding/manpower to implement them.
