7.62mm Rifles for long range pain

I'm wondering about what a good 7.62mm long range rifle would be? I'm wanting to reach out to 800m because thats the length of the range I'm going to be shooting at. Longer is always better too. I'm not purchasing just yet but I'm looking around and seeing what ppl think and whats out there. I was talking about bolt action to someone today, do they make good long range firearms?
 
7.62/.308 will reach out to about 800 meters and that's pretty much the end of it's legs. On a good day with little wind, hits at 1000 meters can be made but in all honesty that's a stretch for the 7.62/.308. If you want a true long range rifle caliber the 300 Win Mag is better -stretching the range to 1200 meters or so. Good heavy barreled precison rifles are common in this caliber. IMHO
 
If you want to use a brake and a bipod, a 30 cal magnum would work, but for pure acurcay from prone with a sling, the .308Win is far better becuase the recoil factor is higher for the magnums.
I have heavy barrelled 300WSM on a weighted stock for long range, and if I load it fown a bit for prone it is fine, but loading a magnum down is counterproductive in some ways.

The 308 can be very effective at 1,000 meters, and if you want to play the Palma game, it is a must ( no brakes allowed, 308case, and 155 grain bullet, prone and sling with irons)

If all you are doing is plinking, the 223 with a 9 twist and 80/77/75gr bullets will equal the 308 with 1/3 the recoil.

If you want something that is a significant improvement, then the 243, 260 and 7-08 are it.

.308 is used at 1200 yards in the UK for Match Rifle. Yes, they use 30-34 inch barrels and 200-220 gr bullets, but they do hit the target regularly at 1200 yards.
Stay away from 168 grain bullets, that are the worst bullet on the market for 1000 yard shooting.

Now Now,,, 308 is a lovely little cartridge and has done some great things on paper at 1000 yards, the only real drawback I see is that it is so hard to see those tiny holes that far away, 50 cal holes are much easier to see
 
From an efficiency prospective you would be better with the 7mm or 6.5. Since your focusing on 30cal, you might consider a rig with a bit of weight to help reduce recoil. Or opt for a noisey brake.

To get ballistic coefficients into the range of the Berger 7mm 180 vld you need to be shooting 220+gr bullets. Significant penalty in recoil!

The 308 is as old as the hills. ...... but guys still make them work. Makes you wonder what they would do with some of the chamberings...
 
The Rem 700 P is a good 1 to work with, the Savage LE2Bs are also great, both under $1100.00, though the Savages are real short on supply right now.
Tikka T3s also shoot well, from there it all boils down to how much $$ you want to spend for prestige or name.
I rework 700s daily and get extreme accuarcy from them, there are other more pricey rifles available as well, but for the $$ hard to beat the 700s

Yes, a Rem 700 is a good gun and can be treaked into being a great gun, but Tikka is GUARANTEED sub MOA out of the box.

Tikka is a good shooter, but if you ever loose your mag, you may be swearing at it, rather than by it. I can not figure out how they figure a plastic mag that has a manufactured cost of under $10.00 commands $90.00 to replace.

IF you are looking for specifically 7.62 not .308, check out the Remington 40-XS or any other military sniper style rifle in 7.62x51 NATO.
 
Will a tikka tac in .308 be able to hit accurately at 800? It's a 20" barrel, so I'm a little skeptical, as I'm sure the shorter barrel causes it to lose velocity. ?
