I've been trying to get a working load for 7.62x25 using cast bullets. Unfortunately the shape of the bullets has me seating them deeper than the factory loads. Is there some sort of math I can do to determine how deep I can safely seat a bullet?

The surplus ammunition has 0.819" of space in the cartridge. New Norinco has 0.816" of space in the cartridge. My reloads have only 0.735" of space and am guessing I need to seat them 0.02 deeper to get them to consistently feed.

I'm using 4.7 grains of titegroup and a 90 grain cast bullet. The brass isn't showing any signs of over pressure and I "feel" less recoil than the norinco or surplus.

I'm currently using the lee TL314-90-SWC I have previously used the 311-93-1R but had leading issues (most likely from only tumble lubing)

Thanks

My 1911 gets great accuracy with the 32 cal 92 gr. cast SWC. Also with the 110 plated M1 carbine bullet.

Tightgroup is rather fast for that caliber. Your load seems hot. if you drop the powder charge, does the gun still cycle? And is accuracy ok?

I run 4.8 of 231 with both bullets.

If you want to try TiteGroup first, set the bullet depth to whatever you like. It has to fit the mag and not engage the rifling. Then load 10 each of 4.0, 4.3 & 4.6 of TG. Shoot these and see if the slide cycles and check for accuracy. I would expect the 4.0 or 4.3 to be best.

I'm pretty much stuck with the powder choices at this time. I can use CFE Pistol, or H110 as well. I started with Unique but I can't get it anymore unfortunately. The layman manual gives me a 4-5 grain range for the cast lead bullets and 4.7 gave the best accuracy but it cycled fine even at 4.0 Hell I can't even find the XTP's anymore.

If you pull any surplus ammo apart you would find that the bullet is seated just enough to be held in the case. The rest of the case is filled with powder all the way to the neck. SWC type bullets are not really good for this cartridge as its really hard to feed through tok feed ramp and lips reliably.
My experience with this cartridge that it would be safe bet to start seating bullets at normal col of the x25 cartridge. I would not worry too much by what amount bullet protrudes in the case when seated. Load development is needed and the amount of modern powder may be less than surplus. If no then bullet type should be changed to round nose flat base.

I never considered casting for this caliber because of the high velocities but now that I drive my Mosin cast loads more than 1600 fps I guess I could start loading the X25 with the same alloy. I've loaded 90gr XTP's with 5.3 gr titegroup and got 1200 fps but not particularly accurate.

For cheaper loads I use 110 gr bullets from Budget Shooter Supply. Perhaps a new mold is in my future...

I haven't had any feeding issues as of yet. My only real issue is the round nose and to a lesser extent the swc hold the action open. You can see on the lead where it's touching the rifling. I'm seating the swc to an overall length of 1.250 I figure if I seat to 1.225 I won't have any interference.

This is what I use now. Cheap plated bullets and very accurate,

I tried those 86gr Hornady 3100G bullets, but wasn't impressed with the lead shavings they left behind. Looked to me like the flatter ogive compared to milsurp was leaving too much space to jump when seated to the cannelure. Good to know someone has had success with .30 carbine, I was thinking of trying that next

I'm also a fan of the Berry's 110gr 30 carbine bullets in my TT33. Another member here gave me this load: 4.5gr of W231, which is much less snappy than the factory 85gr bullets.

Also fwiw, in my TT I use 30 Mauser brass interchangeably with 7.62x25 brass. At first, I thought I had to trim the .30 Mauser to the same length as the 7.62x25, but when I tried the untrimmed 30 Mauser it worked just fine. I also use 30 Mauser dies to reload for it, on smellie's advice that they'd work just fine. As usual, he was bang on. Thanks, smellie!

I haven't seen 7.63 ammo for some time around here =( but thanks for the load suggestion!
Now I can save my titegroup for the 45 =)
