Hi, I'm just looking for some recommendations on inexpensive SKS ammunition that does not contain a steel core. The range I go to doesn't allow it. It seems almost all the surplus stuff I've sourced out contains the steel core. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Do they just disallow steel cores or also bimetal (steel and copper) jackets? If their test for a steel core is a magnet then they will also wont allow that ammo.
FMJ with bimetal jacket
That means the bullet have a lead core and a mostly mild steel jacket with thin layers of copper on the inside and outside. It will still attract a magnet even though it doesn't really add any additional penetration (the issue usually quoted with steel cores). Just to be safe a lot of ranges that ban steel core ammo just ban any bullets that attract a magnet which includes bimetal jackets.

*edit*
Example of bimetal jacket:

Its written in the rules as "rifle ammunition with steel core and/or steel penetrators" is not allowed. In addition to the magnet they also have bolt cutters as I'm sure they're well aware lots of non steel core ammo will still attract the magnet for the reasons mentioned above. I bought some MFS ammo the other day and sure enough it stuck to the magnet but we cracked one open and no steel. I will look into the ammo option listed above. Seems like it should do the trick.

I really appreciate everyone's comments. I'm a newbie to this hobby so it's nice to get some suggestions.
