I would like to build a 7.62x39 AR, and I am looking for a barrel and bolt. I would prefer something short like 7.5" or 10.5" but would consider something 14"

In the past someone suggested Brownells, but they have a $250 import fee for anything like that, so I never went ahead with it

I see complete uppers from NEA but I would prefer to buy just a barrel and bolt and build my own upper with other components I like. Also I have read alot of bad comments about NEA, and I shot one the other day at the range and it was malfunctioning from almost brand new.

PWS seems to make a nice upper, but I cant find any suppliers in Canada

Anyways let me know if you know of any Canadian retailers or even US bases like IRUNGUNS that stock or can order me in something in 7.62x39

Thanks

I order a bolt from Brownell this past Christmas without having to pay for additional licensing fee.

$250 import fee only applies to ITAR items from companies that haven't registered with the US States Department as a exporter or the item is over the $500 export limit that is only granted to Canadians, but email them to be sure.

I tried to buy a upper receiver a few months ago, I got an Email saying anything like barrels, uppers, lowers, etc we have to pay $250 fee to export them

Accessories for the most part dont have the same fee, as I have ordered from them many times over the last year.

Also the barrel/bolt combo they have is 16", so Id rather pay more and get something shorter if possible, 16" is much longer then Id like

They now carry Faxon 10" barrel for $139 and an MGI Enhanced bolt for $124.99

any custom barrel will run you at least $500 or more, so the $250 export fee might not be that hard to swallow.

I will Email them, but if there is a $250 US fee to export those I wont be buying them.....I much prefer IRG, takes a while but there is no export fee for anything bought off their US site....And they usually have alot of parts I want, I just cant seem to find anything for 7.62x39 AR on their site

Check out #####harmory.com, they seem willing to do IRG type imports and added a product I wanted to their website just so I could order it.
Not made my order yet (which coincidentally is for a 7.62x39 barrel) so I can't comment on their actual service.

On the subject of 7.5" 7.62x39 AR's...

Wear a mouthguard. My teeth hurt from the concussion of firing mine for the first time LOL!

Got my finger on the trigger over this one, but I didnt really want a complete upper. I could strip it down and sell that upper...hummmmm

Spending that kind of money than butcher the upper for parts just doesn't make any sense, there is no guarantee the new configuration will be 100% reliable, be patient IRG probably is working on another batch of PSA uppers as we speak.

I just finished building my first AR from parts, it turned out great and was a lot of fun for me. Now I want to do the same with a 762x39 AR. Buying one complete does not do anything for me, as I enjoy building the guns not just shooting them. Buying a complete upper takes %50 of the fun out of it for me....That is why I prefer to build from parts, I get exactly what I want and I get to build stuff....

My first AR build was around $5000, Ive looked into those $349US PSA uppers and personally it is nothing what I am looking at building. Id be chopping that up for parts also, as I dont like that style hand guard or the front sight post...I thouht about buying it and changing out what I want, but again Id rather just buy exactly what I like if possible. Im not looking for a cheap option, Im looking for the bigger brand name (and obviously expensive) options. The main reason for swapping out the upper is my plan was to buy a Seekins Precision billet upper and lower. So if possible Id like to swap out the PWS forged upper for the matching billet upper

I plan to build something like my first AR build but in 762x39 $4000-5000 budget

NEA upper and lower. Maybe a different brake is in order? I'm all for (safe) obnoxious, but the blast is brutal. Not the recoil.

I have 2 blast shield devices a Ferfrans CRD on that 7.5" and a Griffin blast shield on my DD MK18. I love the fireballs and blast from both, the 7.5" is louder and shoots bigger fire balls, and that is what makes it so much fun to shoot. I took it out for the firs time and I had the whole ranges attention, lots of questions and video....I love the blast and fireballs they dont bother me and I try to be understanding and not shoot right next to someone else at the range. If I can I put an empty lane between me and other shooters, so they dont have to deal with the fireballs and concussion coming into their face while they try and shoot. If i take either of those blast shields off, its way worse for me and everyone around me

I can get a 7" NEA upper for like $800, but after shooting a NEA for the first time about 2 weeks ago at the range I wasnt too impressed. The comments on here about NEA dont help either

I shot a 7" 5.56 NEA and it was malfunctioning from almost brand new

So going by that experience Id pay more for something better

If you're building a cost is no object DI gun, then make sure to get an LMT 7.62x39 bolt from Questar. By far the best x39 AR bolt available excepting possibly the POF, though I have no experience with the POF bolts. I have a DPMS and an MGI bolt as well. The DPMS would eat an extractor every 750 rounds or so. Consequently I have a bag of extractors on my work bench. The MGI ran fine, while I had it in the gun, but once I saw that the LMTs were available again, I snagged one of them and a spare extractor, just to be safe and haven't looked back. LMT claims that they've never seen an extractor break on one of their x39 bolts, but since it's proprietary, I grabbed a spare just to be safe.

Not sure I want to get on another Questar pre order Im going on 6 months for my first try at a Questar preorder

Actually Emailed them to ask if I can use the deposit from that towards the upper

I've been mulling this over for some time and the most practical/economical way seems to me to get the WW 7.62x39 version from Kelly's and then just build up a secondary upper .223/5.56. I shoot my guns a lot so the cost of .223 ammo definitely is a factor. I would normally get a slightly used gun, which would work in .223 AR case but it is much harder to build an upper in 7.62x39 (in terms of parts selection and of course price) but no problem building one in .223/5.56. So it appears, WW 7.62x39 AR will be a winner and then just collect the parts for another upper as they show up wherever. Thoughts ?

Having sat on the SCAR preorder list for years, I feel and understand your pain. However they were quick with the bolt. I think around a month from when I ordered. I was quite happy. The LMT bolt is really worth it though, I would council you to take the plunge. Barring that I could probably sell you an MGI enhanced bolt. Not cheap though. LOL

I think you're on the right track IMR4320. I suggest you get the Windham from Kelly's ASAP... I know they only had a few left, and new stick will be $1200+ given the dollar.
