any point to collecting 7.62x39 brass? i often see it left at a range in the brass buckets. is it reloadable? should i be pulling it out of the buckets?

The military surplus steel casings are worthless, but the brass from the newer comercial ammo is reloadable. And if you end up not reloading it yourself you could always sell it...I'm sure lots of guys on here would be interested in buying once fired brass in the EE.

the surplus stuff is dark grey-ish in color right?
One of the finer points of becoming a brass whore is being able to recognize the difference between Berdan & Boxer primed brass 
. Berdan primers have two little holes in them, where Boxer primers have only one hole. For the most part, Berdan primed brass is difficult to deal with. You need a special tool to remove the berdan primers, & berdan primers are more expensive & harder to source than boxer primers. I never bother with berdan primed brass. Any boxer primed brass is a good find IMHO. Some people sneer at "range" brass, but as long as you clean & examine it for defects, any boxer primed brass is good to reload.

Yes, that's right. It's a greyish coloured laquer covering the steel. Steel casings don't make the best candidates for reloading because steel isn't as pliable as brass. When you shoot a cartridge the metal expands, and then when you reload you shrink the case back down to size, and steel casings don't really survive this process very well.
