Windex is water, which flushes salts and contains a light cleaning agent that removes some initial fouling. The ammonia aids by being quick drying. Flushing the bore at the range can speed up the cleaning process at home. So no, not entirely useless.

I've only done that once with my sks. Usually I just put some hopps through it after shooting. Then disassemble and clean it when I get home. I didn't find I saved any real time or effort. Just wasted some windex. Lol
