7.62x39 bullets can they be used in 308 reloading

with the up coming election, if it goes the wrong way,

i am thinking of what to do with my sks ammo stash

and wondered if i should get into reloading and if i could use the 7.62x39 bullets for reloading say 308 or 7.62x51 for use in my other 'toys'

rather than just getting a 7.62x39 bolt action rifle

any thoughts/suggestions welcome, reloading is a new subject to me

Well, I'll let you be the one to do it. I like to reload .308 bullets into .308 guns.

Britinbc: The .303 British is listed as .312, but the .303 usually runs heavier (170ish gr. bullets) I have known guys to use 7.62 X 39 bullets (normally 123 gr.) to load plinking rounds for their .303's. The other thing to remember is that all of these that we're discussing tend to be military surplus, so there may be some variation in diameters and bores. (Quick check on Wiki shows 7.62 X 39 to be .309-.311, and lists the SAAMI spec as .312)

Yes, they can be shot in a 308 just fine. No problem shooting a 310 in a 308.

BUT, you have to make sure that the case neck has room to expand, to release the bullet. Otherwise you have a pipe bomb.

They way to check is to take a fired (un-sized) case and slip a 310 bullet into it. If it slides in, you are good to go. If it won't fit, your chamber has a tight neck and cannot be used with the fat bullets.

This is very important thing to check when using over sized bullets. More common with cast but you can do it with jacketed too, not very much pressure to resize them. As long as the neck can expand.
