I gathered a small supply of older Remington cases, 7.62x39, using small rifle primers. I want to reload 125 grain Sierra bullets, and I have various powders which could work. The thing is, my only small rifle primers are Remington small rifle Benchrest primers. I have no illusions about the possibility of benchrest accuracy out of the 7.62x39.

I'd like to use what I have on hand rather than expanding my supply of stuff used on failed experiments.

If I use those primers, what powder would be the best bet to try? Since all the reloading data I've checked use large rifle primers, to what extent can the information about powder volume be substituted with the smaller primers?

Any of the faster extruded will work fine like H4198, for ball powder I'd use small rifle Magnum primers to ignite them reliably

Thanks for your response to my post.

I assume that the Bench Rest small rifle primers (Remington brand) would be no hotter than a standard, Large Rifle primer? I've never read anything about using data with cartridges that may accept primers of both sizes.

Start low, work up, as with any cartridge. Starting loads are at significantly below max pressure so even if other factors increase the pressure, it shouldn't cause a bad situation. If you want to be extra careful, reduce the starting load a further 10%. With the burn rate of powders in 7.62x39, reducing the charge is perfectly safe.

It depends on your rifle. I liked the RP brass with the small primers and I couldn't get enough imr 4198 in the case to show any pressure signs in a cz 527. I thought the AA 1680 gave better results.
