Ive notived two popular projectile wieghts in Lee molds for 7.62x39. Im curious if anyone out there has any experience with the different projectile weights and which one they would recommend going with or is it a matter of finding what weight my rifles like?

Thanks Nate

It depends on your gun and on what you're trying to do. I shoot bullets as heavy as 230 grs sub-sonic in my break action and bolt guns, but stick to 120-150 grs in my SKS so as to maintain the ability to cycle the action and not drop too much at 200 yds.

I'd start with a light bullet and work up.

These pills will be for my sks collection, attempting to feed them more cheaply. So nothing over 150gn for an sks? Ultimately I think my question is; when loading factory made projectiles I ussually load 123-125gn for my sks. Would that be the same weight for cast projectiles? Ive never loaded 150gn into a sks before. I do understand that the 7.62x39 case has limited powder capacity and that limits the size/options of the projectile.

Thanks for the info

I used to load a 160 gr cast over 15 gr of 2400 for 1700fps. When I do the math(5 cents for a gas check, 5 for a primer, and then 15 gr of powder), I just buy corrosive for 19 cents.
The cast load is still fun and satisfying.

+1 but I still have all the cast equipment for my SKS for the distant future when even corrosive will cost $0.50/rd. It's going to happen. By then I'll either be dead or retired looking for ways to pass my days... casting bullets and working up a load for SKS? Sure. But as long as I can get milsurp ammo for $0.25/rd or less I'll be reloading other calibers instead.

*Note - I've recently been really enjoying casting and loading slugs for my Dominion Outlaw SXS! Slugs are almost $1 ea. I make em for $0.10

Indeed! One reason I was looking at loading my own ammo is to stay away from the corrosive/bulk stuff, even if the ammo is a little more $ and I produce it myself. My russian tula sks is paticularly susceptible to rusting from corrosive and its my best shooter by far. For a little more investment I would like to take corrosive ammo out if my stockpile. Ive also had several failures with bulk x39 ammo and the issues were clearly cheap cases ect. Some of these failures even required a smith visit to remove stuck cases from the chamber. I dont trust bulk x39 ammo so I spend a little more each round for quality and peace of mind.
