The SKS could make an acceptable stalk or brush beater where the shots will be from 25 -60yards mostly. Semi auto and low recoil, nice follow up shots on a running deer. I'd start however at 7mm/08 or .308Win in a carbine, as an overall recommendation for a deer stalker, but knowing the limitations like much like the old 30 WCF, and they will drive to the vitals, and you should recover them within 75 yards of a hit. If you have experience with the .30-30, remember the 762X39 is no better than this, actually a little lacking compared in the penetration department, seeing as the .30 fires a slightly smaller diameter and much heavier(170gr) bullet giving a higher sectional density for penetration, but those 123 SPs should open up nicely on broadside, close shots, dropping deer I'm guessing as good as a 30-30 in this type shot. Know your limitations, sight her well, and don't panic if they don't drop on the spot. You've made a good hit, and they will be laying within rock throwing distance somewhere down there in that thicket.
