Hi guys, I know that there are many of you who hunt with 7.62x39, what do think about it as a protection calibre against (Black) Bear and Cougar?

Great gun for that .
With a folding stock it's quite small , some guys I know carry them in a quiver designed for shotguns . The rifle is more than accurate enough for close quarter action and carry's a good punch . But...
If it's my arse on the line and you are only going to use it for preditor protection I'll take a short barreled 12 gauge pump with 000 buck and slugs .
Just my 2 cents .

It's not my fiirst choice for bear defence, but better than rock throwing.:p

If you use a shotgun, you may find slugs give far better performance than buckshot of any variety.:D

I just love the sks too,it's probably the most powerful rifle I haven't had yet. I am going to sell my Remingtons and Rugers and buy one of those high quality sks rifles I have been hearing so much of these days.Wow, where have I been all these years????
Silly me having Model 700's, Model 70's, Rugers, Husqvarna's ,Mauser's,etc when I could have had the world reknown sks and never had to worry about power in grizzly country.:)
I bet Calum or rolling rock will be glad to sell me one of their high quality sks rifles for about $800 or $900, and a deal at that too.!!!:dancingbanana:

If I where using it for bear defence I'd want a heavier bullet than the 123gr stuff. The Wolf 154gr might be good but I haven't tested out yet so I can't say if it is any good or not.

No way I'm gonna trade my crappy SKS with your expensive accurate remmy or ruger. It has killed more games than my 30-06 or 12ga. $800 to buy my SKS? Forget it!:dancingbanana:

303carbine just will never admit that an SKS can also effectively kill an animal if you know the gun and are able to shoot it properly. The point here isn't if this gun is a good choice for bush defence but he just doesn't like this gun no matter what evidence you provide. He might think that his 303 carbine can do more than an SKS only because SKS is commie gun designed by a commie and made in commie countries. To him politics is above guns. If you ask me if he is a gun nut? I would say...NO.

The SVT40, while packing big heat is a bit too bulky to be brought up quickly, especially in the bush where there might be branches and trees in the way.

The thing is just as long as the full-length Mosin-Nagant... which is freakin' HUGE. They don't fit in standard length guncases. Not very handy when you're walking through tagalters and a grizzly pops up 15 feet away.

Also: I'd stake my COMMIE-MADE Mosin-Nagant M44 to a comparison against any .303 Carbine any day of the week. Performance and stopping power would be about similar, but I can guarantee the Mosin will out-last and out-tough any bolt action ever made.

Gee It's almost like the SKS, and the 7.62x39 cartridge were designed for close combat. Suprise suprise they where. :D

And no my SKS is not for sale. :D

What I do is slinging my rifel (SKS or whatever) and carrying my defender. I'm not superworried about bear but wolves or cougars. With 000 buckshot in a 20' 12 ga you can cover any charging sneaky predators real fast.

buckshot is for coyotes. pack slugs.

why would you carry two firearms? when you could sell both and get a REAL rifle ;) and only have to carry one? :D

Look, when something jumps out of thick bush and charges real fast towards you in a close range, a rifle might be a little too slow. But with buckshot you don't need to aim.

The problem with buckshot is that it doesn't penetrate very well, and at close ranges it fdoesn't have a large enough pattern to increase your hit potential. In short, if youwopudl miss with a single projectile, you woudl miss with buckshot.
