7.62x39 out of a SKS.....what size projectile?

Can anyone give me a definite answer as to what diameter projectile to use in my reloads......308" or .310"? My 50's era Russian SKS is unissued and the barrel is pristine. I've read that it's ok to use .308" projectiles (which I have a lot of), but that accuracy may suffer. However, the SAAMI specs are .310" +/- .002" for the 7.62x39 round.

So would it be ok to use the .308" projectiles or try and find true .310"?
 
The Russians used a .310 ish projectile in all their 7.62 sized projectiles (x25,x39,x54). Hornady makes a 7.62x39 specific projectile in .310 or .311 (can't recall off the top of my head). I've read some people having decent results with .308 and others not so much. Haven't attempted it myself yet.
 
Slug your bore to get bore dia. They were built to shoot .310's but some will shoot .308's fine. I've reloaded some with 150gr. .308's and they shot pretty good. Different guns will get different results. Try it and see but for any high volume shooting I would stick with .310's

Reloading is kinda pointless though with all the cheap surplus around and there seems to be a good selection of factory smokeless in FMJ and hunting loads. I only reloaded it with 150's after I could no longer find the Wolf 154gr. SP's.

Range considerations. Can't use any steel or bi-metal rounds at mine, so that kind of rules out the surplus.

Thanks for all the input. I'll look for Hornady's in .310" and save the .308"s for my M305
