I bought 2 bags of Hornady 7.62x39 brass to do some loads for my AR and it turns out they have small primer pockets , I was not aware that these were even made anymore.

Yes , I'm 100% certain these are small primer pockets

My question is can I use my mil spec .223 small rifle primers in these even though all my load data calls for a large rifle primer

I don't load 7.62x39 but I do load 6ppc. My understanding with smaller cases such as this is the small primers actually aid with accuracy. I'd use a regular small rifle primer, but you may want to experiment with match primers too.

I'm aware that Lapua makes a 308 case with a small primer pocket for that very reason. I wanted to stick with the mil-spec primers since I'm using them in a AR platform but I do believe certain standard primers have the same specs as the mil-spec ones in terms of thickness.

I use identical loads for both large and small primers in 45 ACP. I haven't noticed any significant difference over the chrony so I use the data with either.

I've put all manner of primers through ARs. Federal match primers are generally accepted as the softest out there and they are my number one choice for match shooting in ARs. Ymmv

Go ahead and use the small rifle primers, I have Remington-Peters 7.62X39 brass with small primer pockets, Lapua with Lg Rifle pockets. Same powder charge no noticeable difference here.
