I bought a bunch of PRVI brass, unfired ready to load. Im using Berrys plated bullets at .311. The case mouth on the brass is so tight i have to hold the bullet by hand and guide it into the seating die. I use a bullet feeder and most times the bullet just falls out as soon as i bring it down.

Is it the brass, the bullet or me? Do i need to find an expanding die for this brass? I didnt think it was necessary for necked rifle cases.

Thanks!

I use an m die for all lead butter seating, pistol or rifle. Helps a lot. Also check your neck expander to see what it measures. My die set came with one for 0.308 and 0.311 bullets. If using lead or plated bullets a m die is needed. American made rifles take 0.308 bullets , over seas take 0.311 jacketed. My lead bullets for my CZ and SKS are sized 0.312. Iam shooting 155 gr Lee CG with IMR 4198. I normally make my own expanders up on my lathe.

"i have to hold the bullet by hand and guide it into the seating die" that is the normal procedure when loading all bottleneck rifle cartridges in a single stage press, so may we assume you have experience only with straight wall pistol cartridges and a multi stage automated press? i can't help you with that, I have no experience with that type of press.

Hi, I had a similar problem. I was using lapua brass and bullets. I use a lee expander die. The bullets when seated were loose in the neck, I could easily twist and move them up and down about 2 mm. Was driving me nuts. Loaded lead bullets just fine. Turns out I was using the wrong diameter expanding rod in the die. Switched them out, problem gone. I would suggest you size your brass and with whichever expanding rod works with your brass/bullet combination.
