I recently picked up a set of AR500 gongs for plinking. From my research, I discovered velocity had a greater impact on wear than bullet composition. That being said, I'm still somewhat skeptical about steel on steel contact.

Has anyone tried steel core surplus on AR500?

I do it all the time. My AR500 plates are hanging and free to swing. Never any issues with steel core 7.62x39 surplus. At 100 yards it'll take the paint off my 3/8" plates and barely leave a mark, but generally my 100 yard plates are 1/2". I wasn't thinking when I put a .204 39 grain BlitzKing into the plate from about 120 yards. It made an indent. Worst mark on the plate so far. The impact velocity was too high, good thing it was a varmint bullet.

Ar500 is high carbon quench and tempered steel. Actually abrasion / impact resistant

Steel core ammo that's not AP is mild / soft low carbon non heat treated steel.

Yeah, 204 will zip through mild steel like it was warm butter.

I sell ar500 targets. Check em out.

I have read that you want to keep import velocity under 3000fps. As long a you do that you should be good to go. So i can see why a 204 or 223 can do some damage at closer ranges.
