I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum but since the round is so red...

Just wanted to see if there is any interest in some prechambered savage bbls in 7.62x39 in a .311 bbl. I ordered a couple to chamber, but could get some more if people are interested.

Cheer

I think there'd be demand. Just curious though, what caliber of Savage magazine are you going to use to feed it? The 7.62x39 has a hellacious taper to it. Maybe a .223 magazine and a custom follower?

I'm just doing the bbls, not building complete rifles, good question though.

OK. Hope ya figure something out, that'd be a great setup. Considering that the 7.62x39 is a great short-range round and so inexpensive, I'm surprised more companies don't offer bolt-action 'brush' guns in that caliber. I'd love a little 16" barreled bolt gun or box-fed lever gun in that caliber for backpacking and hunting.

I have a stevens that I put a 7.62x39 barrel on (just a cheap plinker project rifle that actually ended up being one of the most accurate rifles in my collection with handloads).

Anyway, I used a 308 as a donor, and sourced a larger extractor for it. It works with a single-shot follower in it, but it only extracts the case, it doesn't eject it. You'd need to replace your bolt head with a PPC head for proper ejection. Feeding seems to work OK from the dual-stack blind mag, but I bet one of the new single-stack mags from a 223 would work better

How much? Can you do barrels under 18". What contour?

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I would love an inexpensive 16" Savage replacement barrel (factory contour) in .308 or .338 federal. I would like a short rifle for taking game at distances under 200 yards.

I'm just waiting for Boyd's to make a thumbhole stock for the Savage centerfeeds with detachable mags.

I can make anything as long as its legal

Thats what I'm thinking too...

If you can provide barrels, bolt heads, and single shot followers for either chambering, I think you'd have sales for it. Making it easy for your clients to buy everything (short of the rifle) from one source would make it far more appealing from my point of view.

I have no idea why Savage doesn't have a factory 7.62x39mm offering. I'd be inclined to believe they'd sell reasonably well.

Where did you get your extractor from?

Cheers

sharp shooter supply in teh states. Not sure if they can still ship to Canada or not.

They also make a ppc bolt head...

Are you sure that you really want a 0.311" bore? All of the Czech surplus bullets I've measured are 0.3102"-to-0.3105"
Ruger had pretty good luck with a .308" bore; but throated for the surplus round; but I'd think a .310" bore (if that's possible) would make the most sense.

I have a 200 in 223 straight feed that I am eventually going to convert to 7.62x39. I have a new Shilen .311 stainless bbl sitting here for it.

The only problem is the 223 shoots so well and is so much fun I haven't even got around to ordering a reamer. In fact I ended up buying several hundreds of sierra 50gr and a bunch of loaded ammo for brass. It will be a long time untill I have shot that up and loose interest in the 223 to get the itch for the x39

Remington does. Model 799. Really nice bolt rifle. I love it.
