I went to my local club to shoot the other day and someone left a note saying that surplus 7.62x39 ammo couldnt be used anymore because the bullets contained steel (not talking about the casing here but the actual bullets). Does anybody know anything about this nonsense?

The steel ammo can chew up backstops and set them on fire. Most indoor ranges don't allow steel core for this reason.

Yes, it seems that Gun owners are our own worst ennemies. We keep shooting ourselves in the shoot.

Same at the indoor and outdoor clubs i go to, no steel core.

M43 ammunition does have a mild steel core.
Can't see why it should make any difference on an outdoor range with an earth backstop.

It might be the shower of sparks created when an M43 bullet strikes a rock :p adds some excitement to low light shooting :D dont ask them if theyre fudds, just casually walk up and say "what's up Doc? You seen that waskilly wabbit round here?" get the accent right and the fudds will identify themselves :p

There could be a couple of reasons for it. 1, you're in quebec, where they'll use any excuse to make things more restrictive.
2. Could be that people who shoot it dont seem to want to pick up the spent casings after.
The whole "steel core is dangerous" argument is BS.
I would be looking for a new club.

This is a typical reaction that many clubs are forced into. Large amounts of very inexpensive ammunition in the hands of very few disrespectful individuals and trouble makers shooting the crap out of anything and everything.

The byproduct of the decision to ban steel core ammunition, is that the offending members have a ban on the fuel to their destructive habits. The caliber itself, which is not banned is available in commercial (steel-free) brands, is evident to not cause destruction at a buck a round.

Long and the short: we all suffer at the hands of a few disrespectful individuals.

I think that this is what is happening here. And no, there is no liberals or bloc lover at the club (not openly at least)

In a way, 762 x 39 is the centerfire equivalent of 22lr...cheap plinking ammo. Lots of cheap sks's out there, so you can get a lot of people fooling around, scaring fudds with rapid fire strings, etc.,

Fudds object to that, as well as the spent cases that accumulate (what do you expect, it's a shooting range, isn't it?).

Anyway, rather than deal with the behavours/actions that they find objectionable (and risk not being able to justify themselves), they'd rather just ban entire classes of firearms and ammunition. Much easier to do.

Someone else tried to do this "pass the buck" blame game too... Who were they again... Oh yeah! The Liebrals and RCMP.

That's right!

The Libs and NDP types would never blame actual law breakers for their problems, for these are a part of their voting constituencies, together with their powerful lobbies.

Best attack those stodgy small "c" conservative types (who would never vote for them anyway), and with luck, give them criminal records instead. What a great way to persecute your political opponents:(
